I always thought that monk who counted all the begats and came up with Adam being created in 4000-whatever it was BC, could have used his time a lot more wisely.

A closet liberal? Moi? Jon Daily and Steven Colbert are almost mandatory in my house and my two oldest have told me they're going to vote Democrat this year. Shock! Not really. I'm glad they have minds of their own, and I didn't raise a herd of sheep. I have told them (since they asked) that I don't know who I'll vote for.

The reason I'm curious is that there seem to be several posters here who immediately start railing against anyone they suspect of being "liberal" and often become quite personal with that person. I think that may have a little something to do with why some people don't post here anymore.

I've never made a secret of my politics, and have nothing but scorn for those who can't allow an opposing point of view. Variety is the spice of life. Discussion without dissent is the sound of a herd following a bellweather. Dissent adds ideas. Synergy is the combination of differing opinions, moving toward consensus. If someone can't put up with a different point of view, they should be students of Stalin, not of our founding fathers. Stalin executed his dissenters. Removing dissent silences freedom.

I have a feeling that some people here would do the same if they could. Since they can't, they try to discredit them using whatever personal information they can glean about the person. Just yesterday, there were over three comments by three different people trying to make something of the fact that I am in Oregon, and I am wondering what on earth that has to do with politics.

Well guys, you may have been able to run a few "liberals" out of here with those kind of tactics. It won't work with me.

I haven't got a clue about your religion other than what I've read. I could also care less if you are a democrat, republican, liberal or conservative. As I have said and will say again, I think we need those differences. Others may have attacked your politics but it wasn't done by me so calm down please.
Let's see what makes you a liberal is... your mention of being one. You don't hide it and that's fine. I don't think the earth is 6,000 years old but I do have a more conservative view on it than the mainstream. Her believeing that has nothing to do with her politics. If Obama was a muslim, worshiped Alah (sp), and prayed to Mecca would that affect his politics...I'm not sure it would. But to think so based on that alone (as you are doing with Palin) would be racial discrimination. Last time I checked, what was so great about America was that people could worship freely as they chose whether it is believing that God created us and this Earth thousands of years ago OR that we all came from Monkeys and nothingness millions of years ago....we can so choose so as we desire. To discriminate against someone because of their religious beliefs is why so many people have been wrongfully murdered (and some genocides). Her politics is the only thing we should be judging her or any other canidate on...period!

Oh, I'm quite calm, just wondering about a few things. I don't know that I've ever referred to myself as a liberal here; I think it was a few others who did that.

It's just a word, and one that people use so subjectively that it has no real universal meaning.

I think there's ample evidence that her politics are directly affected by her fundamentalism. She as in favor of passing a constitutional amendment that would prevent the legal civil union of gay people; that is a direct reflection of her religious beliefs.

This makes you sound as though you are also referring to yourself as one of those "liberal". What the heck does it matter to you Met? If you are one then so what if you're not, again so what!

Again you are being prejudice against someone who has the same freedom of religion as yourself. A bill such as that would never get passed anyway, and besides it's not even legal in most places here anyway so why bother making a constitutional amendment to ban it even more...c'mon.
Then if Obama or someone else was a muslim, I guess we shouldn't vote for him/her based on that religous preference...I mean he might let Osama Bin Laden in along with his taliban to continue blowing everything up.

I put the word in quotes for a reason; thought it was clear.

No, I'm prejudiced against someone who would make public policy based on her fundamentalist faith. Doesn't matter if the amendment could get passed or not so much as the fact that she would support that action.
