Oh, and another interesting tidbit about abstinence education... they did a study recently with kids who had taken the "purity vow" (I think that's what it's called?), and found a VERY high percentage of them had participated in anal & oral sex. Their reasoning? Well, it's not technically sex, so I can still have fun and retain my virginity! Since they probably aren't receiving sex education in addition to their purity classes, it's highly unlikely that they're protecting themselves in these acts - which are just as likely, if not more so, to spread STDs. Pregnancy is a drop in the bucket compared to AIDs, huh?

I could debate you for hours on these topics as well, but in the end I think we'd still both agree to disagree. And even though I'm sure I disagree with a lot of your views I respect your opinion.
I respect yours too, but respectfully disagree with the above. I still think education is the key, and it has been proven to decrease the rates of pregnancies and diseases. Doesn't mean ALL kids will listen, but if you can reach a few that's enough to be worthwhile... even one life saved is a good reason to continue educating young people. And hey, it worked for me! I'm going on 32 years old, and haven't yet been faced with an unwanted pregnancy or STD - and I'm not exactly a virgin, LOL.

Education never hurts. I just don't get why anyone would want to keep biological facts away from our young people.

Exactly. As long as the facts are being presented without "comments from the peanut gallery," I don't see how anyone could oppose?? I went through sex education in 5th grade, and I certainly didn't run out and have sex that year... Lord no!! But when I decided I was ready for it, I used a condom because I was taught the dangers of not using one - and the proper procedures for using them correctly. I also went on the pill as back-up, since we were TAUGHT that as well. As I said in my last post, the education I received has worked fine so far.

Oh, and my mother's idea of the "sex talk" was giving me a book, and asking if I had any questions... then offering to take me to the OB/GYN at age 15, in case I wanted to go on the pill. I said no thanks, I'm not ready for that yet - LOL. So thank goodness for school sex ed, or I would have been pretty lost! And obviously offering birth control doesn't encourage sex, or my sister & I would've started doing it younger than we did.

Here's the study I mentioned above, in case anyone wants my source... USA Today, among others.

USATODAY.com - Study: Abstinence pledges may trigger risky sexual behavior

A snippet:
"The report by Yale and Columbia University researchers could help explain why a study by the same group last year found that despite having fewer sexual partners and getting married earlier, teens who pledge abstinence are just as likely to have STDs as their peers.

The latest study, published in the April issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that teens who pledge abstinence until marriage are more likely to have oral and anal sex than other teens who have not had intercourse.

"They substitute other non-coital sex, which, however, puts you at risk," said Hannah Brueckner, assistant professor of sociology at Yale University and one of the study's authors.

Among virgins, boys who have pledged abstinence were four times more likely to have had anal sex, according to the study. Overall, pledgers were six times more likely to have oral sex than teens who have remained abstinent but not as part of a pledge.

The pledging group was also less likely to use condoms during their first sexual experience or get tested for STDs, the study found. "

Back to the subject of ignorance--

.
The (other) Californian stated in another post that it is possible to live off the land without eating meat.

In many parts of Alaska, that would mean starvation.

She states that you can grow plants anywhere. And yet she claims to be a botanist.
She's "against" sport hunting. I am too. But people in Alaska don't hunt for that reason. CC gives his annual moose to an older gentleman in Haines who in turn shares it with his friends.

I agree with the Californian about factory farming. I disagree that "you can grow plants anywhere" in a practical sense. A lot of things grow in AK during the summer but there is a little thing called terroir that any botanist or any chef is going to be familiar with.

There are other ways of living, too. But perhaps that hasn't reached you up there yet.
Actually, the Alaska Native diet is one of the healthiest in the world. Who needs greenhouse lettuce when we have berries and salmon?

I don't think that opening a "veggie" food place would work outside of Anchorage, especially if you went into it with the attitude that you're going to educate people about a different way of life.. There are plenty of vegetarian options there already.

Since this thread was about Palin, I suppose I'll try to throw in a little something to keep it marginally on topic. I doubt that she has ever hunted for "sport". Her father was an extremely self sufficient man when he was raising his family.

Sorry to bring something from a locked thread here but what the hell.

Oh. And real botanists don't type "veggie".

It's called reality, and I believe in realistically telling kids/teens how to protect themselves if they have sex - which most of them will before they're legal adults. Teaching someone about protection isn't the same as encouraging sex, just like fire safety drills don't encourage arson. As for the rest of your post, I could debate you for hours on abortion & gay marriage (among other topics), but will save that for the P&OC board.
whether you teach Abstainance or safe sex depends on how and when it is taught. I will always beleive, it todays world 99% of the teens know more than many of us know about sex and how to use birth control, they just don't care.
As for Maine and gay marriage, etc, I have to agree almost 100%. But that is me, you can think what you want. I am not going to change your mind or you, mine.
