Hi,
I was just wondering about how the climate changes from area to area in your beautiful state. I was wondering the differences between areas such as Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kodiak, Barrow and Bethel. Are any areas better/worse than the others? I understand in Barrow, it's dark and gloomy and prolly a little brisk for the winters, but are the summers very nice? I was just wondering if there was anywhere that was more favorable than other areas. Any detailed info you can give me would be very much appreciated. Thanks, SDM |

Juneau and Kodiak are both pretty mild compared to the other areas you mention. They both get a lot of rain (and are beautiful and green as a result) and getting in and out can be difficult because of flight delays due too fog.
Fairbanks is very cold in winter, think 30 to 40 below, but warm in summer. High 70's and 80's are pretty typical. Snowfall varies a lot year to year, but it is typically pretty dry with not a lot of wind. Anchorage falls somewhere between the mildness of Juneau and the severity of Fairbanks. It usually drops down below zero for a short time each winter, but then warms back up to the high teens and 20's. Summers are generally high 60's low 70's with a few days warmer and a few days cooler. I haven't lived in Bethel or Barrow, so will leave them to someone else. |

We're talking hundreds of miles between places. So yes there is alot of different weather from one end of the state to the other, on any given day.

Check out http://www.wunderground.com and pull up the weather data for any of those cities you mentioned and you'll see all kinds of graphs and charts that will show you the differences.
Everyday I look at Anchroage (99501), Barrow (99723), Bethel (99559), Fairbanks (99701), Homer (99603), Juneau (99801), Ketchikan (99901), Kodiak (99615), Nome (99762), Seward (99664) & Sitka (99835). Also check out the Wunder Photos section they have on the website, do a search for Alaska and Alaskan or any of the cities in Alaska and see some fantastic pictures of some awesome scenery. |
