Well...... most of the time, folks here get along fairly well, (this is referenced by folks on some other threads who really don't get along well) comparatively, this site is downright friendly. Now,... that doesn't mean that folks won't step up and call someone a "wingnut" or worse if the situation merits (case in point, who was that guy who wanted to parachute into the "Alaskan wilderness" to camp out for a couple of weeks?) By in large, if folks here are calling you names it is because you are contemplating something almost guaranteed to set you up for a "Darwin" Award , OR , you're talking politics, a subject almost guaranteed to bring out the worst in almost anyones' vocabulary. AND...... I do agree, sorta, I am absolutely at a loss to understand how my country could elect, then re-elect anyone who looks so much like Alfred E. Neuman, only dumber! In all probability it will take, at least one, maybe one and a half terms to get us out of the mess he got us into.

I have lived a lot in small villages like you have. In those situations you have to learn to get along with people a lot different than you are...or just hole up like a hermit. I have found that we can have different opinions, and even express those different opinions over a cup of coffee and still help each other out with winter chores etc.

that's just it, Marty. I have seen only one or two people in real life behaving as if Alaska were a cult and in that case it's always been some rootless maudlin drunk.

In our travel up to check out our new home, I found the folks there to be really nice and exceptionally down-to-earth.
I believe people want to place the aura of cultishness on AK because it is so far removed form the lower 48. I found it far from it in reality. In fact, when we returned back here, people asked me if there was nothing but ice. I showed them pictures of the Bering Sea in summer and they were shocked.
If you want to talk cult, come stay in New Orleans for a few months; you'll see that kind of attitude for certain.

He's saying people stereotype Alaskans into one camp/political spectrum/"bunch of drunks/outlaw"/place is a block of ice/etc. He found that to be obvious B.S. when he actually visited.
Good morning, guys/gals.

Exactly icarian.
People down here seem to want something that doesn't exist in reality.
So, since AK is so far removed, why not put it there?
They'll never visit, unless on a cruise ship, in any event, so why not make it mystical and cult-like?

Oh, I see.
They've always done that....the Greeks used to refer to something they called "Arkticos"--I've no doubt spelled that incorrectly--which was very mysterious, otherwordly....of course it wasn't Alaska but rathers Europe's Arctic regions they meant.

You got it, Met.
Same thing, different century; brilliant example.
