Insects in Winter?
Here it is, mid-February in Seward, Ak, with temps hovering around 30-35 in mid-afternoons. I was out in my yard doing chores this past weekend when all of a sudden I noticed a bug flying slowly about. (almost drifting...very little energy) I thought it was a little unusual, but ignored it and continued on with what I was doing. A while later, I saw another one, so I decided to investigate what it might be. SLAP! One dead bug. I looked at it close up, and I think it's a mosquito. Real skinny, kinda shriveled up looking (maybe 'cuz I squashed it), but a mosquito non-the-less. Could these be male skeeters out early looking for a mate? I wondered where it could have hatched from, because everywhere I look right now is snow and ice. These things don't hibernate in adult form, do they? The skirting was off my trailer, because I was working on plumbing, and it is damp and warm under there....maybe that's where they came from. Just curious if others have noticed bugs flying about so early in the spring?
