This video is precisely what caused me to investigate said statistics regarding whether Alaska has "double the amount of rape as the other 49 states?"
If you'll do a search on this forum, you'll find several discussions relevant to what you want to investigate. It's been talked about quite a lot here.

I believe you, it just happened to coincide that I noticed this thread moments after I viewed the video. I had heard about the crime stats previously, but I had not looked specifically for solid numbers.

This website gives individual info for each state:

U. S. Crime Statistics Total and by State 1960 - 2007

Perhaps so, but the initial question is still legit. And yes, Alaska has a lot of rape, domestic violence, and child abuse.

If you are wondering if it's true...yes it is. Is it a reason to bash Palin? No it isn't. She hasn't been in office long enough to make a difference in that. Besides, the reasons are much deeper than a government program or two can change. This needs to involve a huge statewide initiative with every community getting involved. I do think she needs to take this issue on with a vengeance, if she does not, she should be held accountable along with everyone else in the state.

I feel that the state mostly only researches and reports on this issue, and most of the reporting is politically correct and useless. Almost all the agencies spend more time asking for funding than addressing the issues.

As Met said, there is also a high rate of child abuse and domestic violence.

If you really want to know about sexual violence in Alaska you should read this report by Andre Rosay of the Justice Center at the University of Alaska, Anchorage . It was for 2003-2004 but is still applicable today. It is probably the most accurate and least politically correct report I have seen.

Some important points from the report:

Most incidents were NOT alcohol related.
Most victims were UNDER 16
57% of the suspects were Alaska Native
61% of the victims were Alaska Native
Only 2% of suspects were strangers to the victim
Weapons such as guns and knives were used in less than 1% of the crimes.

Here is one Alaska Native Corporation that is actually doing something about this...South Central Foundation, Family Wellness Warriors Initiative

And you are an expert on women's issues? Speaking as one who was beaten and raped, I can tell you it sure as hell wasn't fun - and I wasn't asking for it, either. I was visiting a friend at school in another city, and her BF set me up with a blind date for the weekend. Was supposed to be a nice guy, president of his fraternity and all that BS. He may have been a 'nice guy' sometimes, but not when he beat the crap out of me. What made it worse was that my friend's landlady was on the other side of the wall transcribing the whole thing. She certainly didn't do anything to help, either - in fact, she wrote a letter to my friend's parents and said she didn't 'appreciate' anyone having rough s*x in her apartment!

A lot of the violence toward women in AK is drug and alcohol related, but there are other instances, too. I have a friend who is now a registered sex offender because he believed the girl who came on to him in a bar in a village - turned out she was underage, and was just trying to make her BF mad and jealous, because she wanted to get married right away and he didn't. My friend got caught in the crossfire, and he said later he'd learned his lesson, alright, any female who gave him the eye would have to show him an ID to prove how old she was, unless she looked at least 40.

Being cautious doesn't mean 'fearful' - it means one has a healthy sense of self-preservation. And fwiw, I never had any problems myself with any man in AK. But I still don't like/trust any of the clean-cut jock types, and it's been well over 40 years since my experience.

Yes, the statistic is true. I researched this very topic back in January. This is what I found: http://www.city-data.com/forum/2485754-post20.html

NOTE: The link to the Census data for metropolitan areas on the above post has changed. The updated link is: http://www.census.gov/popest/metro/tables/2007/CBSA-EST2007-01.xls

Crime in Alaska, in general, is higher than the national average.

What this has to do with Governor Palin, I have no idea. It has been this way before she ever became Governor.

Sounds like North Carolina. For a time I was wondering if NC was the hub of domestic violence in this country. The easiest thing to do if you like club hopping or hitting the bars is to make friends with the biggest guy there. He can be the big mean friend that covers your back when you want to have a good time without being pawed by the drunks & such.

Just to show how you can spin the numbers with statistics, you're about 5 times more likely to be raped in Washington than Alaska, 17 times more likely in California and 5.5 times more likely in New York. This was based on total number of rapes and not something I'd advocate using.

From Met's link, you'll find that a study indicated that 75% of the rapes were done by someone known to the victim with incest being a majority of those cases, which I'm guess is higher than the norm. So for most single females, your risk exposure is likely about the same as the rest of the country.

As other have said, these numbers have nothing to do with Palin as they predate her as governor.
