I've never been to Nome though I had a chance to go recently. What made you decide on Nome?

Well that is good!
You clearly meet one of the two main events in Nome, going to the bars, or going to church....
If you can do both, more power to you!!!
Course, that is the main item in almost any of the smaller Alaskan Towns where the Church verses Bars numbers are about the same....

We currently live in Florida and I know it will definately be a climate change. I cant wait till my hair doesnt frizz anymore, it will just freeze. lol. On a serious note we are going to visit for a week before we make the move to check things out for sure i.e. housing, jobs, costs. A friend of mine lives there now and says that there are plenty of jobs but the housing will be a little difficult. Anyone have any ideas or advice as to what we should be looking for or checking up on during our visit. I already have my resume printed out .
Thanks!! Shelly

I don't know what kind of job you are looking for, but if it's with a native corporation, there is normally a native preference hiring policy. However, if you have a skill that the native hire can't provide, then you could have a decent chance at a job. I lived there for 6 winters and enjoyed the isolation where I could get out on my snow machine without seeing any other people except on rare occasions. Prices are high, most people are friendly enough, and there are enough drunks on Front Street (the main street) to go around.

Why Nome? When we came, we couldn't really find much on the Internet. Checkout Tom Busch's Nome, Alaska Links and it has nice pictures. Why Nome? Did I ask that already? What sort of job are you hoping for? You really want to have things lined up before you get here because if not, you might be in for much more than you bargained for. it is not easy to find a job or find housing. Living in Nome has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am so glad we came, but it was extremely overwhelming even coming from elsewhere in Alaska, and if we had not had a job lined up and a place to stay temporarily, we would have been in big trouble. Once you get closer to making plans, PM me and I can tell you about companies to fly your stuff in with, who to contact for rentals, jobs, etc. You can come here and really do well if you make plans ahead of time. Depending on your skills, I might be able to help with a job at the hospital. You'll have to call snowmobiles snowmachines, though!

The Glue Pot is gone!!!
I just read in the Nome Nugget that the Glue Pot has been torn down. I used to take Ambrose, "The Mayor of St. Michael", over there for a cheeseburger every Saturday during the summer of 1985. He'd usually see me walking down the sidewalk over by the old AC Company. He would come up to me and say "If you buy me Oly, I'll be your friend". I'd always reply "How about a cheeseburger over at the GluePot instead?" He'd get this long look of his face an say "Okay, but I'm not gonna be your friend".
I just can't believe it's gone. Greasy chili and concession stand nachos always hit the spot after a day of mining gold on the beach.

They are tearing lots of buildings down. There was a list of condemned buildings and now they are goin' down! Now if they could get rid of some of the junk that sits everywhere, we'd be golden!
