AlaskaPat- We aren't exactly sure yet. Things are so uncertain with the economy that our future has become a little more uncertain. We have land in Talkeetna, but........ we are wondering about leaving Alaska (after 11 years!) to be closer to family, closer to services, cheaper living, etc. Hard decisions to make......

Can you tell me about the hospital? I may be taking a flight nurse job in Nome.

It's actually a good hospital for rural Alaska. I think the flight nurse position would be an interesting one. They are supposed to be building a new hospital and have it up and running by 2012. Go for the job. It will be an adventure.

Was that a staff infection or a staph infection Sometimes I think that I, too, have a staff infection. Hehe. Can that be treated with a big long vacation to Hawaii?

Never had to spell STAPH before. Actually they are more common in tropical areas.

Nome is a wonderful place to be! You have to prepare yourself for the high prices and inaccessibility of common creature comforts that you may be used to. When I went to Nome, I already had a job and housing arranged for me so that made it a little easier. I wrote an article about what it's like to be a newcomer in Nome at: http://www.arh.noaa.gov/diversity/AR...y_Aug_2006.pdf Check it out. If you are a drinker, prepare yourself for the prices - try $12 for a six pack of skunk beer and upwards of $60 for a bottle of booze. You can get a small bottle for around $20 (if I remember correctly) and $5 for a bottle of beer at the bar. You learn to not look at the prices after a while - drinking becomes a special occasion after a while if you're on any kind of budget.
The best part of Nome is how easy it is to make friends and how you learn to appreciate the simple things. It's a culture shock but if you embrace it - you'll be happy with your decision. Just check any vanity or snobbery at the door and you'll do fine.

Thanks everybody! I made it up here & I absolutely love it! Thanks for all of the advice, especially MeganAK. Those PAC boots were one of the smartest things I brought with me!
