Wow!
This is sounding better to me all the time!
Since me wife is a smoker, what is the cost of cigarettes?

In Sterling they go for 5 bucks a pack. Worse in town. But there is a tabacco shop in Soldotna that sells for like 4.50 a pack for Marlboro's. I don't smoke so I really don't pay attention to thier cost. Copenhagen I can give you the price at every nook and cranny from Homer to Anchorage!

Now that IS a bargain. We are now paying $2.79 for regular up to $2.99 for premium.

The prices of some of the other staples I have read about here is about what we pay here in Vegas. And since the housing market sky-rocketed here in Vegas over the last 4-5 years, the Alaskan housing market also looks like a bargain to us.

Wow, I didn't realize. That is more than 100% up from here in California. My stepson just moved to Barrow with his mom and her husband from Arkansas. Her husband claims it was for $8 hr more pay, but I know Arkansas' cost of groceries has to be less than Calif. So for 80% more pay they are now paying around 120% more in groceries. Doing the math I can't see the plus.
I hear the bread is frozen there. Is there no fresh bread or bakery?

I lived in Arkansas back in the mid and late 80's. I could get 5 loaves of bread for a dollar, a dozen eggs for 25 cents, 7 lbs of chicken for 2 bucks. 40 dollars worth of groceries would last me a good month!

There is a Wonder Bakery here in Anchorage. The only reason the bread would be frozen would be because it sat on the runway or in an unheated aircraft bay.
