Since almost all the Alcan is paved or "Chipped", it may be muddy in the spots where there is construction going on, but that is going to be a small section of the overall drive.

The drive will still be sub zero at nights, but may start getting up to above freezing during the days, but I wouldn't plan on it, once you get to about Dawson Creek at the beginning of the AlCan, you are going to be in "Winter" driving conditions the entire way in early to mid March.

Regardless, you will have a great trip if you have a good car and winter tires.

You will still need to drive defensively regardless, you have big animals that will run out into the road and in the dark, they don't get seen until they are almost in your lap.

If you go to the Auto parts store and get the High intensity headlights, they will give you more light. They normally run about fifty bucks a set, but well worth it.

I drive a 3-series BMW and am considering the highway for a visit in/around December. Should I just forget about driving it?

I don't know what this is? Are you moving up permanently? It's quite a long drive for just a visit....

Assuming you have the right tires (i.e., studded), and carry chains, just about any car will make it. Also, it helps to have winter snow/ice driving experience.

My main plan is to move up in spring, this trip would be to visit family around Christmas and see if my car can hack it in a northern winter.

BMW stands for Bavarian Motor Works (Bayerische Motoren Werke (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8d/Bayerische_Motoren_Werke_Aktiengesellschaft.ogg - broken link) in German). Bavaria borders the Alps, so I'd assume they plan on them being driven in the snow.
