I honestly don't know how to describe it, but the meat had a bit of a skunk smell to it. Then the smoke from the fire (was burning some dead hickory branches) added something to it. If that says anything. It was disgusting, that's the best way to describe it...

Are you going to have a still up there? This is an interesting book if you are thinking about that. I'd like to try making the Fireweed Blossom wine....I stumbled across it while looking around after I'd had something made with distilled violets...can't remember what it's called but it was quite good:

I don't drink. A still to distill water, make alcohol fuel and extract volatile oils from other things would be useful, but my hatred for the ATF/feds might get in the way of that, a still is easy to make but I wouldn't want to get caught (or else my handful of liberal relatives who compare me to Randy Weaver, minus the white seperatism ideas, will be on to something)...

Would that be illegal? All I really know about it is that the wine my father makes as a hobbyist here is perfectly legal. And I do intend on making the fireweed blossom wine as soon as I can.

Ya, the feds have outlawed production of liquor in home stills for a few decades. What kills me about this is, as you say, it's legal to produce beer and wine in your home for personal consumption. So, why couldn't you produce liquor for personal consumption?? The more regs we have, the further we get from the ideas that founded this country. (In my opinion).
I was watching a documentary the other day about old time bootleggers--FASCINATING--and cool. Some still do it in parts of America--which I think is awesome. My history is fuzzy but I think the reasoning for outlawing stills originally was to prevent black-market liquor sales and evasion of gov't taxes on alcohol. Gov't always wants their pound of flesh. Guess that's still the reasoning. Then Prohibition came and gave 'em another excuse.
Anyway, I've partaken of homemade moonshine a few times--all I can say is, WOW!! Smooth but like liquid fire, baby. If that can happen at the same time.

What I meant though was that in arctic's case, why would it be illegal for him to distill water?
I know a couple of bootleggers...I've heard that moonshine can be very good, but I simply can't stand the taste of whiskey of any sort.
Brandy is distilled wine...uh oh, I'd better go dump it out before someone turns me in.
I don't give a damn about the feds; I'm making salmonberry brandy next summer.

You can have a still for water but if it's large enough and the feds find it they'll harass you over it (read: cook up charges). Seriously, lots of people have found themselves the victims of the ATF that way. I hate the feds, but you know that already...
Electronic Code of Federal Regulations:
Exception for those not used for alcohol, there at the registration requirement and also in the regs. on licenses and taxes required, but just as the ATF has liked to cook up charges of "constructive possession" of grenades on people who have blackpowder (nevermind they have BP guns) and pipes or worse yet one of those dummy/deactivated grenade decorations (know all those cases where they boast they got dozens of grenades or "bomb making" material? Yep, generally it's some poor fellow with perfectly legal blackpowder and some scrap pipes or something lying around they decided to target)...they'll do the same if you have a still large enough to be practical for making alcohol.
Met, just be careful. The feds regularly patrol forums...when I used to have a small forum of my own I discovered I had lots of feds visiting...they'll treat you the same as they treat someone with an illegal machine gun or a shotgun with 1/2" filed off the barrel...you know, spend millions for a big fancy raid, kill your kid and spouse, over that $200 tax or whatever amount it is.

Well I suppose if I decided to get serious about it I could get a micro distiller's liscence, though I don't really want to do it commercially; I'm just curious about the process and about the end result.

Probably not, with the way you swill down Wild Turkey.
I know people that make Khalua; they use grain alcohol or vodka or some such, is that illegal too?
