Yes, the villages that got fuel barged in this summer at the peak of the prices. Now they have to sell it for those high prices.

Seems like the state should step in.

This is a good wake-up call for villages to get off fuel oil, or make much more efficient houses. The state is helping some there with AHFCs rural incentives

Marty didn't the villages have more efficent houses before the lower 48 folks ever set foot in AK? Some of the dwellings that we saw at the Native center in Anchorage were very warm.

Venezuela's Chavez offers heat to villages: Rural Alaska | adn.com

Quote:
With heating oil prices approaching $10 a gallon in rural Alaska and reports of neighbors stealing fuel from neighbors to warm their homes, a Venezuela-owned oil company plans to supply free fuel to villages again this winter.

Right now, as we speak, some of our illustrious state politicians are proposing an anti-gouging law to help ease gas prices. Yet this same vaulted group of individuals just completed and in depth study and failed to determine a cause as to why gas prices are higher in Alaska than elswhere.

In other words, these guys are perfectly comfortable enacting a "solution" to a problem even though they are unsure of the cause.

I say take every drop we can get from the guy. With oil prices falling, it won't be long before he's bankrupt. We might as well do our part to speed him along to that end.

Yes, this is my point exactly. If we went back to a modern version of some of the older designs they would be extremely efficient. You could practically heat them with a candle.

But we have "upgraded" to large spacious houses built on stilts above the ground so that the cold and wind can hit them from all 6 sides.

Smaller is better, warmer is better, less energy is better...sheesh, I'm starting to sound like a lefty. But it's true that our tendency to want large open houses with lots of windows and high ceilings just eats energy. Thats fine if thats where you like to spend your money, but when you are paying $9 a gallon for fuel oil you wonder.

Well I don't see why you can't be conservative in some areas & liberal in others. Everything balances out in the end.
