I've been reading a bit more about bush communities & I was wondering how many still have to cart the honey buckets to the sea versus the honey rocket plumbing that gracefully decorates one's home. Also is the force of the vacuum the same as the toilets at The Captain Cook? I was impressed by the severity & power of the toilets there which I have never encountered outside of a cruise ship.
I never lived in community that hauled honey buckets to the sea. The ones I lived in usually had a common open sewage lagoon somewhere close by. I was in quite a few houses where the honey bucket was nothing more than a white 5 gallon bucket, no seat or lid.
I don't think they haul them to the sea. Most of the villages around here are getting running water now, except for some coastal villages and some upriver from here. Tundra villages west of here have dump stations on the boardwalk system or they haul it to a lagoon away from the village and dump them.
Sewage lagoons? I hope the wind blows away from the villages. Down here we too have sewage lagoons & during the summer months they stink. You know what I mean. Some developers have built homes right across from the lagoons too.
The white 5 gallon bucket seems to be the best solution. Although I can't imagine having to haul the bucket to the lagoon when its -30, then trying to knock the frozen sludge out.
When we were in Barrow they had a honey bucket truck that came around about every other day. You had to have your buckets on the porch or outside the door or they wouldn't pick them up. In Wainwright and Atqasuk we had to haul our own buckets over to the lagoon.
