I need a really good, recession proof business.
So I was thinking about manufacturing and distributing ammo. But, alas, even though there is a massive market of appropriate, errr, "customers" (usually spelled s-u-c-k-e-r-s), it is also clear that the red tape and the competition are both insurmountable. Basically, the greedy bastards beat me to that one.
But! I'm saved! I found the perfect thing. And shortly I'll be manufacturing enough tin foil hats to satisfy all the CD people, and perhaps their neighbors too.

I've looked at many options over the years, but AK still calls me This recession makes things so scary now though. And you're right, there is so much good info on self sufficient living out there, what did we do before the web!?

Where you moving to Lyoness? Alaska's dry, Where did you visit when you were in THE BIG LAND?
Ive called all my freinds/ aquaintances in AK and they say Alaska is a go if you are not dependent. If you can keep a homestead going without support if need be , I think its possible with 2 people and live comfortably. Nothing wrong with ORGANIC moose meat, low on fiber tho.
B Owl ; do you have any data insight on State of Alaskas damage hit which it will sustain in this upcoming depresion that will make 1929 look like your typical church picnic? ps; if your a (Tv watcher you wont have the brain wave capacity to answer this question) which makes up 90% of the lower 48.

Used to be a juy in Kodiak who did his own loading and was constantly getting nailed trying to take pickup loads on the ferry to various gun shows. His ammo wasn't what anyone would call reliable, though, he had a nasty habit of making hot loads with very old brass - nothing anyone with half a brain would care to take a chance on using. No red tape whatsoever, as far as he was concerned, just a nice little home business. His house was right downtown, and if it had ever burned, it would have turned most of downtown into a crater. My sis, when she visited, wanted to know why he wasn't arrested, and she couldn't quite grasp the fact that while he had a private armory, there weren't any laws against it.

I'm failry sure I will settle in Palmer, though I can transfer anywhere in the state. From all the research I've done the weather would be milder there, which is what I want to start. And I definately don't want larger town. From there who knows? I need to see other areas once I get there. I may decide I can handle the -40 temps.
It has been many, many years since I was in AK. Anchorage and Seward, Denali, my uncle was stationed there. Some things you never forget, just wouldn't recognize.

That's so true of places that are remembered one way but have completely changed since the last time you were there.

It's the feeling you never forget. I know you felt it on your visit Barkely, so you know what I mean. The kind of peacefulness that gets into your soul, the way the air smells and the way the sky looks different.....you know...Home.

Well there's nothing official out there to compare what's about to come. I think that AK will weather the storm better than the lower 48 simply by virtue of the state having a smaller population. I think that the native population will weather the storm better because their way of living is more focused on the community rather than on individuals.
I think that groups of like minded folks who band together & who can barter goods & services will be able to form communities that will weather the storm. It truly helps that most everyone is heavily armed. It'll be easier to protect what you have as well as your families & friends who may be firearms shy, but still have important skills that need to be protected.
I think that Alaska will have more reliable sources of energy when the electric grid fails down here. Food would be the primary concern, especially fruits & veggies to prevent scurvy.
