Those words are possibly the most offensive thing I've ever read in this forum. They are an assault on the entire concept of justice, common decency, and reason itself. HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY THINK THIS IS TRUE?!?

It absolutely stuns me that anyone could possibly, under any circumstances, think like this. It completely disregards the entire concept of personal responsibility for ones own actions. This kind of mush-brained, irrational, completely idi0tic so-called reasoning is actively aiding and abetting the downfall of our nation and undermines one of the most important pillars supporting the entire concept of civilization itself. There is no possible way to take a sentence like that out of context, and it's just so TOTALLY wrong. Anyone that would utter those words obviously needs to be slapped back into reality as soon as possible, by whatever means are necessary.

Gang members who commit "senseless/needless killing" aren't victims, they are MURDERERS who need to be PERMANENTLY removed from society.

GOD help us.

But if you put those words in the context in which Brian wrote them... they say exactly the same thing you are saying. He was laying on a bit of sarcasm rather thickly, mocking the literal meaning of the words he used.

Default late night

Floyd, I sincerely hope that's true.

In that case I'm glad that I went back earlier and toned down the rhetoric of the original post. I didn't read it as sarcasm, but I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.

Perhaps I should refrain from posting to the more controversial threads late at night when I'm tired and grumpy. Probably a good idea just to get more sleep anyway, and spend less time on the internet.

I do a lot of stuff when I'm tired, so does Brian. Of course I've been talking to Brian in person for nearly two months now, so it's a lot easier for me to catch the drift of what he means on the occasions when he isn't all that clear.

Actually I teased him about that one, and he was genuinely amazed that it had been misunderstood... but then he hasn't had a chance yet to go back and read it after the fact yet either. (I learned long ago not to assume readers will infer anything from one paragraph to the next. Heck, lots of conservatives can't infer something from one phrase of a sentence to the next... :-)

funny as I read the post as close to dripping with sarcasm but then again I was reading as posted which probably does make a difference in tones of typed words!! keep reading and posting Rotorhead, we are all only human and tend interpret differently.

Default smilies

I'm a pretty sarcastic person in general, so I like to use the smilie to make sure that others get the intended effect.

The whole "moral relativism" thing gets my back up in a hurry. I'm a bit spring-loaded to the attack position when I get the general impression that someone's trying to advocate for the abrogation of personal responsibility. It irritates the heck out of me that an entire industry has sprung up to promote the concept that you can legally blame others for something that you've done. IMHO, we'd be a far sight better off as a nation if we took the lawyers down a notch or ten. The whole idea that you can base a business model off the (irrevocably flawed) theory that that nobody is responsible for their own actions is abhorrant to me.

I apologise for flying off the handle. I do, however, think that you should specify fairly clearly when you're being sarcastic when posting online since others aren't there to actually see you rolling your eyes and smirking.

Ummm....like this!

<sigh> As a misunderstood conservative, I know that I never understand anything anyone else has said at any time. 90% of the time, however, I find that if i refrain from flaming out at the least item, I can sometimes get a glimmer of understanding of someone else's point of view. I might not agree with them, but seeing things from another person's perspective is the key to compromise and compassion.

I can even get along with my boys! The wife, on the other hand, can be a real cross to bear.

I learned this trick from the Marist Brothers who taught at the high school I attended. Brother Cogger was a large gentle man, who taught physics and logic. 2 of the most dreaded courses. But his lessons were always full of pithy examples of how arguments escalated into wars. Brother Maher was the disciplinarian, but was a Boston Southie with an Irishman's sense of moral outrage at any injustice. There were a whole bunch of these guys, but disparate personalities found a way to get along in a cloistered community.

I have lost my temper on this site about 3 times. I was attacked about a year and a half ago, and refrained from retaliating, because I didn't want to escalate the incident into a flame war. My friends here defended me without my having to enter a new post, and I felt vindicated. I know that as a conservative reactionary, I could wind up being anathema to half of the members of this forum. But if all I ever did was congregate with people who agreed with everything I ever said, I would never learn anything at all. Opposing viewpoints are why we have to advance in every field.

Originally, God was the one who created the world. Science said maybe so, but geologic time says something different. We left the Catholic church behind shortly after Galileo was tried for heresy. Science took the lead. But have we left our beliefs behind? Of course not.

Learning is opening your mind to other possibilities. If all we believed was all we ever learned, we would wind up as ignorant peasants, afraid of the dark. I enjoy a lot of the give and take here. But it is sometimes contentious enough to make me uncomfortable. I worry that people that I might learn from will fall aside if they perceive themselves in the minority.
