I worked in a freezer at a blood storage facility once sealing the leaks in the -28 freezer. I have mad respect for people able to work in that temp as we did it in 20 minute shifts. 2 men in for 20 minutes 2 men out, and that wasnt pleasant! LOL kinda funny that my cold experience was in a freezer considering what you all deal with.
I am with her, see she is special!!! I was telecommuting long before we came up here, but it is something I am very grateful to be able to do. It also takes a lot of discipline to get the work done, and to forget about the other things that should be done because of being home...then there are the people that think because you are working at home, you are really not working...so it is important to set "rules" from the get go, like leaving voicemail or answering machine pick up the phone unless important, letting people know you are working between say 9 and 5, etc. It is also important to shut the work off when time and not let it take over your life

OK - I just read that newsclip from Grannysroost. Good LORD! Can't even imagine cold like that. Sending everyone in AK lots of warm thoughts. How on earth do the wild critters survive this? They must dig deep holes in caves and go into hibernation.

I guess you all wonder the same thing in the summer when you read that it's 118º F here in Phoenix for 10 days straight. XTREME weather! Arrrrgh!

Well, don't hurt each other. Stay warm and sane. I'll visit, but I think I'll wait this month out... I'll be in Sssssssouth Dakota in a couple of weeks, and that wind blowing across the plains will be challenge enough!

this is a neat site to bookmark (from the article Grannysroost shared)

Bears and several other species hibernate, but certain birds continue very much awake and having their normal bird life through the coldest winter days. For example, ravens and seagulls, although ravens are more plentiful in the interior than seagulls. There are leeches at the bottom of the sloughs nearby. I have no idea how they survive, but they do. We even have frogs that sort of "almost freeze" as they survive under layers of leaves and other matter in forested areas, then thaw during the summer and go about their lives. We have "ice worms," too. These wiggle their way through summers and winters inside large ice packs such as glaciers. Something else, a good layer of snow in my backyard keeps the lawn alive, barely If I ride a snow machine (snowmobile) on this layer of snow, the track left behind kills the grass as the snow is compacted and loses its insulation. During the summer when the grass is green, I still can see the dead grass across the backyard.

I don't see how those little birds outside my window don't turn into ice cubes and fall to the ground.

I keep my bird seed inside until I place it on the feeder. And I just give them a cup at a time so they get 4 or 5 warm meals a day when I'm home! It's gotta help the poor things.

Good grief! I got the shivers just reading this thread.

I think I will have to turn the heat on just to warm up! My inside temp is currently 60 degrees. Maybe I'll open up the door, and see if it's warmer outside the house than inside....

San Diego, where all the wimps migrate for the winter.

Putting a heater in the bird bath works great too.

warmer water just freezes quicker :P

Tonight
Mostly clear. Areas of dense ice fog in valleys. Lows 40 to 55 below in valleys...except around 20 below on the hills. Light winds...except northeast winds to 15 mph on the hills.

Its said that for 2 weeks now!! I would love some -20 right now. Its getting to where my clutch is freezing up driving down the road at night.
