Earthen homes in AK?
Has anyone build a type of Earthen Home in AK? and Are they worth the extra money, to get them up and running? with the permafrost? Another thought is, how far south does the permafrost go? Anchorage? POW?
I have been considering building one of these homes instead of stick built, when I buy. I have narrowed the location to NE of Anchorage down to SE AK.(Big area, I know!) I will be flying up this summer to look at a couple locations.
If you know of any less expensive acrage within 1 hr of a town, atleast in the foot hills of some mountains, if not in them, you can send that info my way. (Like you have never heard that before). May as well make sure it is an area to have a large garden(hobby farm). O'h, and since this is a wish list, must have year round access.
Thanks.

warpt...I think something similar, only with more modern technology is what we all should be looking at. But especially those of us who spend high dollars for fuel oil. Can you imagine how little fuel it would take to heat one of those sod houses.
I got a kick out of the one in Hooper Bay with the windmills in the photo as well. That was a true mix of technology. Use what works.

Very cool links Warpt. And some good reading. I liked the rules for hunting.
