That's probably true. I just don't let the dog eat raw moose bones and meat because of tape worm eggs.

I don't eat raw food, I wouldn't feed it to a dog. My old dog agreed with me, if it ain't burned, it ain't cooked!

Smart man!

Wildlife Diseases & Parasites: Liver Tapeworm Cysts, Alaska Department of Fish and Game
What causes liver tapeworm cysts?
  • This condition is caused by the larvae of the tapeworm Taenia hydatigena.
  • Lifecycle: The tapeworm needs two hosts: a carnivore (e.g., wolf or dog) and an herbivore (e.g., caribou). The adult tapeworm grows and lays eggs in the intestines of the carnivore. Eggs come out in the carnivore’s droppings and contaminate plants that are eaten by the herbivore. The eggs hatch into larvae that travel to the herbivore’s liver where they form cysts. Carnivores become infected when they eat liver containing cysts.
.......Cooking will kill the parasite.

I wonder what happened to him or to anyone else because of him.
Oh, this was over 30 years ago. We knew who did it, it was a bunch of summer cannery workers who were staying in a cabin near us who snagged him on their way to the ferry when they left. They'd tried to buy him, and we told them over and over he wasn't for sale and why, but I imagine they finally found out for themselves just what a disaster he was. But he was far and away the best-looking of the litter, black with a white mask and eyes as blue as a sunny sky.

pugluvr will become famous soon enoughpugluvr will become famous soon enough
I've read through this whole thread and I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents here about raw feeding. I am not here to debate with anyone, I'm only sharing what I've been informed by my vet and the research I've done on my own between kibble and raw diets. My sister is a vet tech and the vet that she works for (and I take my dogs too) push the raw diet. When vets attend vet school, they get 1 semester of education in nutrition, that's it, only one semester. It is then up to the vet to continue their education in nutrition if they choose to do so. The reason why a lot of these vets push, for example, Science Diet, is because SD gives all the vets attending school, free kibble, if they choose to feed it to their own animals. So, when a client comes in and says, what do you feed your animals, they usually say Science Diet. That is why you'll see Science Diet in many vet offices. This is the case at least for the 3 different universities that the vets that I go to, and my sister works for, went too. To me, one semester of education in nutrition is not enough at all, especially since they attend so many more years of vet school. It is important, to me, what I feed my dogs. I was disgusted when I read what by-products are, read what BHA/BHT does to their organs, how they can not digest corn, etc. Anyway, I've been feeding my dogs the raw diet for almost 2 years. Every year we have their blood work done to make sure all their levels are where they need to be and they have been. My vet is very impressed with my dogs health, their skin, coat, etc. The reason why dogs can eat raw food is because their digestive systems are shorter, which means they digest the food faster which in turn, prevents them from getting sick from bacteria, like a human would. Their digestive systems are meant for raw food. Thier ancestors all ate raw food. Even in the wild today, they eat raw food. Kibble was not invented until the late 19th century and did not become popular until around WWII. Before this, people would feed table scraps and such to their dogs. It is actually harder on a dogs digestive system to digest kibble then it is raw food because their bodies were not meant to be fed kibble. I used to feel the same about kibble and never imagined I'd ever feed my dogs raw. Not until I started researching in to it more and talking with my vet about it in depth and learning how beneficial it is for my dogs. Everyone is different and has their own opinions and what they feel is best for their dogs. I'm only sharing my story because I used to turn my head at people that used to talk about the raw diet and to this day, I regret not looking in to it sooner. And now, I only hope that before anyone turns away from a raw diet for their dogs, like I once did, that they really look in to it and see the benefits of it before they opt against it. I am so glad I took the time to talk to my vet and research it this time.
