Living near the Mat-Su Hospital in Palmer.
I'm moving to the Palmer area in July to work at the Mat-Su Hospital. My hope is that I will be able to find a house within walking or biking distance from the hospital. It looks like neighborhoods are pretty spread out and there's not a whole lot of housing in that area. I'm looking for some local opinions on life in the immediate area. Does it have any type of a "reputation"? Is it family friendly? Are there parks or paths? How is it for running, biking or skiing? Thanks for your subjective opinions.

I live pretty close to the hospital, but still about 2 miles away. There are few homes real close to the hospital but if you are patient and look for awhile you might find some. Are you looking to rent or buy. If you are looking to buy, I'm going to sell my house and move closer to Palmer. My house is located near the Mat-Su College and has access to the Crevasse Morraine Trail system.
That said, Trunk Road is not a good road to bike or walk next to. It is very narrow with no shoulder to ride a bike on. You could ride a mountain bike in the dirt 4 wheeler trail.
Depending on what you consider to be a reasonable walking distance you should be able to find something. But the selection is sparse. Here are two houses just across the highway from the hospital.

The Mat-Su Regional Medical Plaza is about half-way between downtown Palmer and downtown Wasilla, approximately 7 or 8 miles from either downtown.
The area is relatively new to development, so it doesn't have any sort of reputation yet, good or bad. As Marty said, there are not many homes in the area. Trunk Road is a major thoroughfare, a two-lane road with lots of traffic in both directions. Trunk Road is commonly used by commuters who want to connect with the Park's Highway from the Palmer/Wasilla Highway or visa versa. Bicycling along this road could be hazardous since there are no bicycle trails.

Either... I like the way that you presented listings early in this thread too.

There are a few houses for rent but I don't know where they are in relation to the hospital.

Marty- I think anything within a 5 mile radius would be fine. I do want to live in an are where I can go for a good run without crossing too many busy streets. How can I get details on the house you're selling? We're in the market to buy.

Sent you a PM
The best website is www.AlaskaRealEstate.com - Statewide MLS system - Homes, Land, Commercial, Businesses Also check out craigslist.
You can plug house addresses into google maps to see how close they are to the hospital.
My house won't be on the market for a month or so. It will be priced at $240K. It is 2900 square feet with a detached 768 sq ft garage. It has a beautiful mountain view of Pioneer Peak. Here is the view out my window
