Its not the mullets that scare me its the big hairy men .... oh my gosh they dont even keep their beards in shape they are all straggly and plain nasty looking. Maybe i've been sheltered from this as in N Michigan all the men were blonde adonis's

This is still Alaska after all. Some of those men might actually live a bush lifestyle. If you are out in the bush for months you don't care to much what your hair or beard looks like. You feel like you have accomplished something if it's clean.
It would be good to take a canoe trip down the Yukon or something to see some real Alaska. You will meet some real characters and after that, all the city folks will seem pretty civilized even if they do have scraggly beards.
