Default Aurora: Anchorage vs. Fairbanks

I've heard that Fairbanks is the best place to see the Northern Lights. Is it worth the 300 mile trip from Anchorage, or can I see them just as well in Anchorage?

Definitely take the journey. The likelihood of you witnessing the Aurorae is far greater outside of Fairbanks than in Anchorage at this time. Another year or two should bring far better displays to the Anchorage area.

I don't know that I would drive 350 miles from Anchorage to Fairbanks just to see the northern lights. However, Highlandlady is correct in that your likelihood of witnessing northern lights around Fairbanks is better than your likelihood of witnessing northern lights around Anchorage. Primarily because Anchorage has more cloudy days than Fairbanks. You also need to drive far enough away from Anchorage and Fairbanks to get out of the light pollution in order to see the northern lights clearly, and in Anchorage's case, that means a further drive than if you were in Fairbanks.

Do yourself a favor and just drive to Chena Hot Springs. Sit in the springs all day, get a nap, watch the northern lights during the night. And the food is good.

Default viewing better in Fairbanks

For sure, you will have a better chances of seeing the northern lights in Fairbanks. But before you make that 350 mile drive, check out the forecast:
