Exactly, so go down to the gun shop, buy yourself a small caliber firearm (223 or something) a case of shells and hit the range. Get some of the spin targets like chickens, ducks. Set them out there at about 100-150 yards and have a blast! No body says you have to hunt but shooting can really be fun. Try to spin a 50 yard target out at 100-150 yards...
Dang, GrillGod we are going to have to hit the range when you get back from the slope. I have a pile of 243's laying around.

Where are you??? We're looking for other couples/families to hang out with.... so far the only people we've met only want to talk about hunting and fishing, which is great for them- but not our style!
|
Hi there. I don't hunt or fish.
It's a big part of the lifestyle though. I'd suggest finding people that you like and getting to know them--maybe suffer through some hunting and fishing talk. Once you develop friendships beyond a superficial level you'll have plenty to discuss. Rural Alaska really does have a good share of educated, cultured, and well travelled people living in it.
And differences can be appealing. Two of my best friends in the interior are the huntin' and fishin'-est women I've ever met, and when it comes to any sort of guy stuff I am a complete wuss. We had so much fun though; and most of the fun was related to those differences.

I am REALLY, REALLY jealous of you being where you are. The best I can do right now is dream of living part time in AK (hunting, fishing, camping, riding horseback, drinking in the great outdoors...) and making a reality of moving from God forsaken California to the lovely Oregon Coast.
I enjoy the outdoorsy things, plus blues concerts, movies, the symphony, museums, gourmet cooking, and other "cultured" things. I had to escort my eldest son to New York City when he was 13 and 14 years old while he worked for Nickelodeon. I made sure my little rock star got cultured...ice skating in Central Park, a Broadway show, Radio City Music Hall, the Apollo, the Gugenheim, Met Museum of Art, Museum of Natural History, the Twin Towers (before and after), the Empire State Building, and more! What an opportunity for him. There is usually two sides to everyone...I KNOW you will meet others that share your interests. One of the things I look forward to the most regarding moving to Oregon is meeting new faces. I love to learn new stuff from new people!

Sounds great I'll be available after Thursday. I'm sure I have some blow off rounds available. Still need to get some powder and primers so I can do some loading.

Non-fishers/hunters in Fairbanks. GL with that. The majority of people in the interior are there for that exact reason, especially hunting. You might stumble across the occasional person who is stuck there, and misses the city life, but that is like finding a needle in a haystack. At any rate, good luck.

Are there any transplanted city-slickers out there?
|
I'm a "transplant" and I don't hunt. Fishing is okay but not something I do on a regular basis. You can live here without doing those things. Its certainly not a requirement. I didn't move to Alaska for some fabulous "Alaskan Adventure" like many people do. Alaska was not on my list of places to visit more or less live but life throws you some curve balls and you end up in some unlikely places. You'll find people to hang out with who don't have giant fish and moose heads hanging on their walls. They are out there...I promise!

Hey sambo, like a couple others on here have said, maybe try your luck at doing some outdoorsy stuff too, nothing too rugged, just to get your feet wet. I LOVE camping & I go fishing, but I definitely do not hunt, nor would I ever. I live here in Milwaukee, so I can understand where you're coming from, it'd be hard to find common interests if the only thing people talked about were things that you definitely are not interested in. But you never know, just get out there & start talking to people, try to steer the conversation to a common ground. Like Barkley said, post some things on here or other forums, I'm sure you'll get some bites. In the meantime, enjoy where you are, it's a beautiful place I'm sure!

See if some of the local bars, liquor stores or brew pubs have tastings. You'd be surprised how many people really enjoy discovering the complex flavors of a merlot or who like tasting a number of different styles of beer. I personally don't care for a wine that has hints of musk ox & leather.

I completely agree. Alaska isn't all that one-dimensional. But those things aren't mutually exclusive; just because someone hunts and fishes doesn't mean that they don't have other aspects to their personalities.
