Anchorage/Tok--Glenn highway/Tok Cutoff
I am planning on arriving in Anchorage March 6th and staying for the start of the Iditarod. I would like to travel to Tok by the Glenn Highway/Tok cutoff on March the 8th. I know you can't predict the exact weather for march the 8th 09 just asking for you your opnion if this is possible, also do I have to rent a four wheel drive pick-up or can I just rent a car?? I am from Michigan and have lots of experience driving on snow and ice covered roads.
I also would appreciate any information on the Aurora Borealis during this time of the year.

Yes, it is definitely possible. Assuming there isn't a big snow the day or two before you want to visit Tok, you should have no problems. They do a good job of keeping the highways clear of snow, but as I'm sure you are aware being experienced with winter driving, the highway can still be slick in spots. As long as you drive according to the conditions, a FWD sedan (with studded tires) is all you will need.

Roughly 6 hours or so, depending on your speed and road conditions. Most of the road is now repaved and is in very good condition. I drove on it last summer and it wasn't too bad. Don't know about the frost heaves from this winter though.

It took 6 hours for us too last June. I'd figure a little more time for when you are planning to travel and carry emergency supplies, which is a good idea any time of the year. The road is traveled, but it could be hours before you're found.
