The problem in Anchorage is that the only hunting allowed in the city limit is by bow, and it's limited. The moose on the other hand are not limited, in any way, shape or form. My boys have been blocked in from school by moose, and I had to stay home for a couple of hours to wait for mama and her calf to clear out. Do NOT mess with a cow and calf combo parked on the walkway to your car!

Here's another critter we see every once in awhile: a coyote. This one was in a field by the Seward airport this morning, looking for mice under the snow. He would have his nose down to the ground, looking and listening intently. We saw him jump up once into the air, then land on a precise spot with his front paws...but he came up "empty-pawed". Fortunately, I had my camera and a telephoto lens, because we could get no closer than about 100 yards. He had attracted quite a few spectators, gawking from their cars, before finally ambling off into the woods. He looks pretty healthy...

Actually thats not on a river....its along the back edge of a small bay I crab fish in.

I was prowling along the shore close as the tide was pretty high that day...she was laying in that tall grass right near the shore and I didn't see her til I was right on her...at that point she stood up and snapped at me and sent the cubs running inland....I was actually shooting video, when she stopped to see if I was still there I grabbed my whistle and with that I was able to get her and the 3 cubs to stand up a couple times.

She's been a regular in the back of that bay for several years and every spring she shows up with 2 or 3 cubs..

And..... down Lynn Canal about 60 miles near Juneau this channel marker is a regular haul-out spot for sea lions......notice the critter up inside the marker above the others, he must be a good climber
