I REALLY don't want to get into this right now.

Bears might be cute, but they ain't "cuddly". Snarky would be a definition on a real good day, as long as you're not between them and food, a sow and cubs, or Smokey didn't get out of the wrong side of the den this morning.

Exotic pets are extraordinarily controlled up here, as we don't want to introduce an invasive species and knock the current ecosystem for a loop. Northern Pike are bad enough - ask any fisherman.

Land is owned - by the state, the federal government, and the native corporations. Some is owned by the incorporated township or city which surrounds it. Homesteading is a thing of the past.

Troll or not, this sort of thing is what causes us to have to answer these questions seriously in order that the naive and the gullible don't get taken in. The Discovery Channel just had a little special on bears last night, which is probably what inspired this budding comedian to write. Gentle Ben and Smokey the bear aside, bears are unpredictable. Gentle Ben attacked his trainer twice on the set. When we are young, we want pets like a hawk or a wolf - maybe a bear cub. Learning the inadequacies of a human dealing with a non-domesticated animal, generally puts such child dreams into the realm of fantasy unfulfilled. Even bruins raised in captivity from new born have turned in their owners. Siegfried and Roy worked with the same large cuddly cats for years, yet they know that a decade's familiarity can be erased in a wild moment.

My advice: You want a pet? Get a nice Lab.
I have two..because, well, one big ol' dopey lap dog isn't enough, you know

Well that way you can two separate foot warmers. I have found that dogs will lie on top of one foot but draw the line at laying on 2 bony feet like mine.

Thank you everyone who replied to me. Yes I am joking about the bears and cougars (mountain lions). But seriously looking for the other info I requested in my original thread. Some of you are too serious here, lighten up please, really. I am sure some got a chuckle or two, no need to be mean or insulting. Technically the "troll" comment made about me, really applies to the person who made the comment initially, as you may fit this profile more that I as you HAD to reply to my thread, rather than passing it by. Like I said I just wanted some info, not looking to "upset" the locals (or out of state locals in some cases) here. The questions I asked were legit, and only one person was nice enough to actually explain the laws, and thank you starlite9. So no more dumb questions I guess..... OH one last Question are there other towns that may have free land grants? Not sure I want to locate to Anderson. Now I do like exotic pets, I have owned about any animal you can think of including bats. I wanted to have a pet skunk in WA, but it's illegal. Now if skunks are legal there, and trained properly, I would not need bear mace would I?? ....think about it, I'm onto something here...

Didn't figure you were going to go out and try petting a Grizzly.... well more than once anyway. If you did really believe that, you weren't either old enough to move out of your parents house, or you are too unstable to leave the world of padded cells....

But otherwise, ask all the questions you want. Someone here can answer them....

You got some snarky answers mostly due to timing. The 'LT' referred to in one of the posts was a nitwit called lone traveler, and while he wasn't precisely a troll, he certainly did liven things up for awhile.

But there have also been an incredible number of people asking incredibly dumb questions, like 'can I drive to Dutch Harbor?' Well, no, they can't. Dutch is on an island. Seems like a lot of people don't even bother to look at a map! A lot of the questions they ask are ones they could easily find the answers to using Google, or the 'search' feature on this forum, things like 'how much is a plane ticket?' And there are the ones who think what they see on the Discovery Channel is what Life is Really Like in Alaska. It isn't.

As far as exotic pets go, the only ones I can think of are various reptiles and lizards, ferrets - which are required to be neutered before being sold, and wolf hybrids. And the exotic birds, parrots, etc, but they have specific housing requirements and won't survive outside if they escape.

Is this land opportunity a one time shot in 2007, or soemthing done periodically?

Msmart, one time deal, the land was owned by the city (village), and was an attempt to increase the size of the tax base. It was said, upon completion of the giveaway, that they might try it again later, but you should contact the city council of Anderson in order to see if the situation will come up again.

I currently live in fairbanks. Is there a school for children in the Anderson area? Also, how long do they give the person to build a home or improve the land before the land is considered forfeited? Thank you and have a great day!
