Oddly enough, my husband and I, both retired Marines, have been dreaming of retiring to Alaska, but who can afford to buy a place of our own on retired Military pay?
We are both in our 50's and resonably healthy, with grown daughters, one of which will probably be going with us if we do move.
What we can offer the community, is our skills. My husband, Bruno, is not only a welder, but an A & P mechanic who is at this time, working in Iraq, with the US Army, and he has several years of construction ability under his belt.
At the moment, I am finishing college, and I have dreams of opening a small needlework store, for knitting, Crochet, and Sewing. If you give us an address, we will dip into our savings and send the check in the next mail, because we are quite serious about this.
If you are looking for hard-working, reliable people, who just want a place to belong to, after a lifetime of moving around, then we're your people!
Sincerely,
Glynis

We have bears everywhere. Pretty much no problem. Just random maulings and stuff. Don't deny yourself coming here just because of some bear stories.

Glynis send the first poster an e-mail and see if you can work something out. Might be quicker than waiting for a reply on here. Hope you can make it.

Glynis, FYI: A&P mechanics would likely find employment up here in Ak. There are WAY more airplanes (per capita) in Alaska than any other state in the USA. There is always a need for a good A&P mechanic. Tell your husband, pack your stuff, and come on up! What kind of town are you looking for?

This isn't as unique as it sounds. Some rural towns in Kansas have been doing this for years. Problem is, you'd have to live in Kansas. lol Just google free land and you'll be suprised.

First I'd like to apologize for not answering quicker...I work night shift and didn't think to check for replies earlier...again, I apologize.
To answer a few questions...
Applying out of state is done by mail in. Since the mail doesn't arrive until noon, anyone who is in person before noon will have the first choices on land.
I DO NOT expect to have all 26 lots filled on Monday, so I think it would still be profitable for you to mail in an application. The money would be refunded if there were no lots available.
We are located approximately 5 miles from Clear Air Station, where there are military and civilian jobs available. Clear is now an Air National Guard station, so full time positions are available and you would be permanently stationed at Clear. We are 75 miles from Fairbanks, a modern city of about 60,000 people. It is the second largest city in Alaska. We have a state owned paved runway that is 3,000 feet long. Several residents of Anderson own aircraft.
All of the filing information can be found at

In the article it sounded like local people are applying to get the land, so will there be any left for people from out of state? Or is this mainly to get people from other areas of Alaska to move to this town? It's pretty hard to compete with people that are already up there to stand in line. Is the town going to be doing this again if it is successfull? Also, I need a high speed internet connection for my job - is it available in this area?

We are trying to bring in people from Alaska or the lower 48, it doesn't matter.
If it is successful, we have plans to do the same with another section of land that is being surveyed for subdivision.
Yes, there is high speed internet. To my knowledge the only internet service available is DSL.
