There's nothing to do in the lower 48. Stay in Alaska and secede!

Right Ed...and the Alaska Ferry only leaves Bellingham on Friday nights at 7 and late the following day you're up around Prince Rupert anyway....takes about 60% off the ferry fare

There is plenty to see on the water from Rupert up to Ketchikan (6 hours) and on up to Sitka, Juneau and Haines.

Its a very easy drive to Prince Rupert, or Rupert to Bellingham, up the Fraser River Canyon on great roads...

Thumbs up Drive to/From Anchorage

Stiff Necked response was what I would Probably do. The Cassiar is a more Scenic Route than the AL-CAN. GAS is going to be expensive this summer, so you are going to pay no matter what. You can get a berth for 4 on the Ferry, or if you want to go the cheap route sleep on Deck, but it will rain, and you will have to share Public Restrooms that way. They do rent bedding and many people sleep in the lounges, But I paid for a Berth, as I and my Brother in Law are senior citizens, and it was easier that way.

The scenery is beautiful coming up the Inside Passage too, and learning about the Navigational items coming through the Narrows was very interesting to me. Your kids may surprise you. They may find the trip very interesting and talk about it for years. I know my kids talked about the trip from OR- MN and back for many years after we took it, as we made many interesting stops, all the Indian places, Wild West, etc.

I hope this Helps,

Donna

No offense, but I bet that trip happened two years ago... Although since I am looking at going, I got something out of your advice...
