Yes there are mosquitoes in Juneau, but lately they haven't been as bad. I think it's been due to the wet, rainy, cool summers we've had. I think they are far worse in the interior. A far worse problem is the No-see-ums. They are tiny and can get through screens.
We've used citronella candles and mosquito coils outside, but the best way to repel them is to use a repellent high in DEET content.

Doesn't make that much difference. Sometimes you have to be ambidextrous and use both hands.

Yeah they are big, a 12 Gage shotgun with buck shot will take care of the really big ones, but bird shot is a lot better on the swarms.
I found the flame thrower (can of hair spray or starting fluid with a lighter) is much more satisfying and is very entertaining to the kids that can't go outside and play and have to watch though the screened in windows, reinforced with re-bar of course to keep the bears out.
Up farther North, we have Mosquito's, which is a smaller variety of the Giant Southern Alaskan Mosaquito's.
Not to worry though, just drink lots of Orange Juice just like they give you at the Red Cross after you donate blood...

Great advice, guess I should buy a 12 Gage, and flame thrower here before I come up, I hear the price of everything is double up there.
OJ and Tequila!, sounds like a plan.

Believe it or not, a steady diet of garlic pills and the occasional match head (sulphur - the paper matches) help.
My first spring the mosquitos were so thick I thought that I was going to lose my mind. I was running around and waving my arms like those folks in the Killer Bee movies. You'd take a breath and 4 would fly into your mouth. I really almost lost it.
After that first breakup, you become desensitized to them. They just do touch-n-gos on your eyeballs and they don't bother you anymore. Your first experiences will be truly horrific, but they'll pass.
I always get a kick out of visiting relatives reaction to the bugs. They are non-stop smacking and slapping the insects away like they were going to single-handedly destroy the Interior's mosquito population.
My step-father had so many slap marks on his face he looked like a battered husband.

I believe the mosaquito's were brought up to SE Alaska in the luggage of intinerent seasonal Mexican laborers. So a steady supply of garlic, hotsauce and tequila may result in your having your own steady swarm; much like Pig Pen's dirt swarm in the Peanuts cartoons.
