The company i worked for had to drop a bear in point lay last year. They were charged by 3 polar bears at the same time. The guide took one down and the other 2 ran away. I have pictures of 3 bears running forward then 2 running away.

In fact one of the major problems in places like Barrow, where tourist and other forms of short term visitors are common, is that polar bears do look nice and friendly, and sort of act like it too sometimes.

So things happen, like the couple who came back from a drive (with no locals in the truck) out towards the point and told a few folks how they'd seen a polar bear. The man said he didn't get any good pictures, but his wife didn't mind the cold and wind as much, and she got out and walked up close enough to get some good ones!

A few years back the spring weather just happened to strand about 60 bears out by Point Barrow for the summer, and for awhile the tour business was very good. But the land and the road out there are owned by UIC, and along with a few other folks (the NSB police among others) they got fairly nervous in a hurry as stories started floating around about locals on 4 wheelers going out to look at the bears... and just sort of pulling up 10 feet from half a dozen bears feeding on the gut pile from butchered whales! UIC closed the road and made it a by permit only access for a couple years after that.

That just blows me away, because to me they look nice at a distance, but up close I swear those things are a mean lean eating machine!

when i first got to alaska and was getting the tour around the supply room at my surveying company i noticed 12 gauge slugs strung around the room. My boss looked at me and said "you dont want to shoot the bear but sometimes you have to..." thats when i knew i was in alaska

There was one killed outside of Ft. Yukon this summer, not much about it in the news. If only Al Gore knew...

I was horrified to think of the possibility of another one wandering around the Interior.

The one at Ft. Yukon was big news in Anchorage. The ADN had an article claiming it wasn't a danger and didn'tneed to be killed. Don't know the reality of that statement, how would they know?
