Well that is certainly an amusing analysis.

The actual case though is that I've never had any problem with a Mal. But unlike you I have put in thousands of hours training sleddogs. I have read the same books you have, too. :-)

I would ask if you have ever owned one, but not too sure I would even believe your answer. As I've stated before I own/breed Giant Alaskan Malamutes and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about them and their persoanlly observed abilities.
I've never owned one. I was never of the opinion that large dogs had any value on a trapline.

I did spend some time chatting about the various blood lines of Malemute strains with Earl and Natalie Norris though... You probably read about them in books. They were mostly into Siberians but did have a few Malemutes too. I don't think Earl ever ran them in a team though.

The OP simply asked our "opinions" as to what we felt her options could be as far as dogs. It appears you are trying to pick a fight through a battle of wits and I'm not going to go to war with an unarmed person, when it is simply your opinion, which you are entitled to. Don't make it a personal vendetta against the Mal you wronged you.
Looks like you are the one who wants to fight about it. I just said they are great companion dogs and lousy sleddogs. Those are facts. Of course breeders all want to live fantasies about the supposed history of their breed, and great tales of White Fang are indeed fun to read. But other than with recreational teams, Malemutes don't get used for real dogsledding. And there are good reasons for that.

So as I said before...we can agree to disagree, but a little education never hurt anyone.
Yeah... like I said, go train a few hundred dogs to pull a sled and you too will get an education.

I don't drive...haven't in 26 years. ((Poor eyesight / lack of depth perception))
That's never been a problem, I've either walked, biked or taken a bus.
The problem is now that we're up here in "bear & moose" country...EVEN ON BASE...I'm a bit hesitant to go "walking" very far. ((MIND you, the kids & I are used to 3 - 6 miles a day...in the summer months back in Spokane, we even did 12 a few times!)) I can't imagine being cooped up due to fear of bear / moose attacks. Not just to me personally, but my kids!
My question to y'all is...once we get into our house (17 days...YEAH!!!) & I get my dog back (Aussie), would another, more aggressive (guardian) dog like say a Great Pryenees be a good idea? I doubt my Aussie would do much besides run like heck (like the rest of us) away from a bear or moose, & so I'm wondering what y'all think / recommend. I gotta tell you, I never DREAMED I'd EVER be afraid to go outside...I normally spend as much time as possible outside...and while we have gone outside, walked a couple of miles, I was terrified the entire way of spotting a moose (been there, done that on base already, but from INSIDE a car!) there or back.
Ok, I'm ready...let me hear from you long time Alaskans! What would YOU do?
Thanks & God bless!
Great Pyrenees are livestock guardians, not people. They're not called Gentle Giant for nothing. I'd consider another breed for personal protection. I've owned three of them. They're great dogs!

Personally I'd go with an ankle biter like a Chewwowah. Those little guys are great watchdogs. And you can always throw them at a bear and get yourself a minute to run! I'll bet a hundred of those could pull a sled. Maybe not very fast but...

Seriously...I'm joking.

Floyd, your opinion is your own and your arrogant attitude shows exactly how you feel. You know nothing of my background with my dogs or anything else. May I remind you there is a huge difference between huskies and Malamutes, so don't go getting the two confused.

As I said before my family and I have raised Malamutes for years, they make excellent sleddogs and heavy freighting dogs...again not for speed but long haul endurance.

You didn't just say they were lousy sleddogs but also not worth a nickle for protection or anything else. For you to make such a generalized statement like that about all Malamutes shows you are the one who knows nothing about the breed. Claiming you know so much from talking to people who raise siberian huskies proves my point. As far as protection I have personally seen what they can do...no need to convince you who obviously dislikes the breed.

For such an expert maybe you should look into how to spell the word Malamute its not Malemute!

Um, Unconcious, Pretty much what you're suggesting is that "I" be bear bait then! "I" am "old"...just ask my 2 boys! They keep asking me which dinosaur I prefered playing with!
And I'll bite...(ha ha, pun intended!) WHY should I stay away from Ship Creek?

I fail to see the humor in that. Just because you can outrun an old person doesn't mean a po'd bear isn't going to come after you as well. Bear knocks old person to the ground and then see's you still running. Now the bear is chasing you. Watcha gonna do when he comes for you??
