Default Marine Mechanic

My husband and I would like to move to Alaska. I'm in the search for the best place to live that needs the most boat mechanics. We currently live in WA and would like to go north to raise our children. Was hoping to get some opinions for the best places to raise a family with a lot of boating needs.

Ketchikan or Juneau. Maybe Sitka, Petersburg or Wrangell if you line something up in advance.

Seward. Four Season Marine is based there, and keep pretty busy.

Default size matters

It depends on what kind of boats you're talking about. If it's big ones, try the homeport cities of the Alaska Marine Highway vessels, or the container and cargo ships of Anchorage, or the tankers out of Kenai and Valdez.

If you're talking about charter type boats, outboards, etc., try Seward or Homer or Sitka. POW might be a good choice, lots of smaller boats there. All along SE Alaska there are marinas and fishing fleets, but fuel prices are up and income is down so it might be a tough market.

Send a note to all the harbor masters in the towns that you wish to seek employment at, ask them to post your abilities on the bulletin board and see who calls. Any of the Coastal towns could use good mechanics, if you are bad, they will know that quickly too....

Do you just do outboards, inboards, gas or diesel? Put what you do on the card for them to post. If you have a Coast Guard license, then add that too.

Good luck.
