andrewrossburgess is on a distinguished road
Default I Live in England, and want to visit alaska

I really want to plan a proper hiking/camping trip in Alaska next year. I want to visit Katmai National park. I've not really done alot of camping in this country and never done anything as scary as this. But I wanna do it, and I will do it

My dilemma is this, I cannot go alone (far too dangerous). I'm not likely to find a friend from my own country who wants to join me, and even if I do, they'll know less than me about survival in places like that. I've looked at guide services and I am pretty sure I wont be able to afford them alongside the cost of flights and so on. My other option, is to find a local who is willing to join me. I want to do it in summer next year and will start planning as well in advance as possible.

I'm open to any possibilities but I'd like to go for a couple of weeks, first week in Anchorage, seein the nightlife maybe, going to some bars/clubs, and of course prepare for camping trip. Then for the second week I'd like to fly out to King Salmon to visit Katmai and go off hiking/camping with someone.

so I'm asking on here, any alaska locals who like hiking/camping want to join me? add me on msn for a chat andrewrossburgess@hotmail.com

Well there is a lot of neat places you could come and see without the "Danger" and still see a lot of stuff. You can take a ride on a plane to the Lodge that is in Katmai or go to King Salmom and take a boat ride into the back side of the park.

Denali National Park is also a pretty good place to go and see the wildlife...

Katmai, In addition to bears there can be some pretty nasty weather there. Why do you want to go to Katmai specifically? I hike alone often. I don't worry too much about it. It's not that much more dangerous than with someone else. You need to bring some method of communication...a sat phone would be good.

If you haven't camped much I wouldn't recommend it however. There are much nicer places to camp for a newbie.
