I always wanted to come to Alaska when I was active, but my specialty prevented my being stationed north of Mare Island. I spent the majority of my time in Asia anyway. You'll either love Alaska, or you'll hate it. Most don't want to leave after coming here and adapting, but some can't get over the winter cold or the darkness. Or the distance to family is too great.
I can guarantee that you will find many friends from both the military and civilian sides if you live on the economy. Alaska is a very military friendly state. Unlike some. And I don't mean lip service to military support. Real and active support. I live in Anchorage but will grant that even though Anchorage is really friendly to the average troop, Fairbanks takes the cake. BDU's or digicams are de riguere in town, and people go out of their way to say hi.
Hope you have a great and successful tour.

So far, I've read back in the archives pretty far, and in the last 6 months of archives there's been like THIRTY posts from people being sent up there from Texas bases.
Too bad there's no base-specific forums, or one labeled specifically for people moving up so warptman can have 10 stickies on the same old questions :P

I finally know the answer to that. MEDCOM is big up there in Alaska and FT. Sam Houston in Texas is pretty much where all the medcial AIT is. So its not so much people who've always lived in Texas, just people who train in Ft. Sam Houston get sent up to Alaska due to the need of medical mos' from MEDCOM.

Like I said, take full advantage of the military's resources. While in-processing, ask any questions you have. They should know the answers. Unless, you are like me, and enjoy tripping them up.

That's Army though. Air Force Tech Schools (med & otherwise) are all over the place, though some are in Texas.

Isn't Alaska where the winter warfare schools are located?

Some. Some are in other countries as Joint Task blah blah blah. At least one is in Antarctica. But keep in mind that not everyone that gets stationed in Alaska goes through Winter Warfare Training.. just as most people that get stationed in Texas or Arizona do not go through desert warfare training. ie: My guy had never been out in the high-heat-type elements until he was deployed, so boy was he surprised!

So then you either have to be in a specialty that requires a specialized school or you have to be assigned to an elite unit?
