Rapes in Alaska
Why do so many rapes occur in Alaska? I mean...no state even comes close to the per capita rape rate in Alaska. Why is this?

I am not sure, but my guess is a combination of alcohol and the darkness.

Well, if you consider how often alcohol is involved in any instance of rape- I think it's 98% and how much alcohol abuse there is up here it sort of makes sense, unfortunate and horrible as that is.

Look at this thread, especially the post by Marty Van Diest:
double the amount of rape as the other 49 states?
The main point is that most all rapists are known to the victim.

Drunk driving is more of a problem in Alaska than anything else...I've lived and traveled in many large cities around the world...the only accident I was ever in was by a drunk driver around 1 PM in a small town in Alaska (Wasilla) lol.

According to reports, the victim-suspect relationships broke down as follows:
46% were friends or acquaintances; 35% were family members; 12% were former or current partners. Only 2% were strangers
Victim demographics:
89% female; 61% Native and 38% White–On average, 16 years old (80% under 21 years of age; 65% under 16)–Most assaults were intra-racial–Most victims were younger than suspects
Intra-racial is saying Native on Native or white on white, vs. inter-racial.
Suspect Demographics as follows:
97% male–59% Native and 37% White–On average, 29 years old
Identity known for 90% of suspects
These are based across 2 years for all reported rapes. Yep. Highest in the nation. Note that the rapes are perpetrated by people known to the victim in all but 2% of the cases.

Thinking they can escape their past probably, or get away with more.

Maybe because we don't allow brother and sister marrages like down south, that way they aren't called rapes there?
There shouldn't be any rapes, but it happens and mostly in the villages where a class differance between men and women have always existed, and alcohol is a major factor. As far as in the cities, I would doubt that the rate is any different from Stateside.

alcohol and homelessness
There are numerous past threads on exactly this issue. In Anchorage and the larger cities, a major part of the problem involves the intersection of alcohol and homelessness.
