Although perhaps a town with more than one towtruck and cheaper towing might have been nice, I'd assume.

There ARE two towtrucks, but only one was able to drive into Canada to get us. He charged us $630 to tow it 60 miles back to Haines (we were 20 miles into the YT)- fortunately our insurance covers towing. We got back into town at 9pm and stayed at the Captain's Choice. By 8 the next morning, every person in town knew who we were and what happened. The owner of the motel was awesome- he gave us a room for as long as we needed it for half the rate. The mechanic was right down the street and he's an old Vietnam Navy vet, and I'm a navy vet- so he treated us great. The closest replacement part was in Arizona, so we had it overnighted.

What we didn't know is that "overnight" to Haines, AK is actually 3 days, lol. And it was over a weekend, so it really took 4. And then it turned out to be the wrong part. It was a mess.

There was this retired guy, also a Vietnam vet, who hung round the mechanic's shop all the time to bull****. He offered us a tour of the town and that was nice- we had no idea there are two state parks right outside of town. He took us to the VFW for burger night and, in general, made us feel really welcome.

And when we finally left, the members of the Haines legion sent us a gift certificate for a fishing charter in Haines... so we could "come back and enjoy the town under better circumstances."

We are definitely going back.

Default small town charm

Yup, a lot of really, really nice folks out there once you get out of the big cities. Although there are some negative issues living in a small town, I'd say overall that the experience has been far more positive than negative.
