well I'm not trying to be rude. I just think that people should seriously consider what they're getting into when they want to move to Alaska, especially when they have a family to support. I know people who move here and are really happy with their choice. But for me, I didn't even think about where I was moving. I was in love and thought, "why not?" Actually I don't regret it, even though moving will be a challenge and we may have to start over. But I don't think my stakes are quite so high since I don't have several kids to support. And yes, when I lived in Texas I wanted to get away and see the world and thought it was hot at the time. But let me tell you, a 100 degree day is not the same level of annoyance or danger as the subzero temperatures we get here.

I hear you...I think you're right, people do need to think. We moved up last summer with our 6 kids but we waited longer than we needed to because we refused to come up until my hubby had secured a year round job and we had a big enough house to live in. hubby started work 2 weeks after our arrival. He was laid off a few months later which really sucked but was able to find steady work again (until the recent layoff last month). Thank goodness we had savings and such. Even with that it has still been hard. The economy sucks and I think some people hear about how great Alaska is and the pfd money (esp with a big family) think that makes it all worth while.....not so.
It is much more expensive up here (esp Anchorage), jobs are scarce right now and people are preferring Alaskans for those jobs.
Mach, I think it would be much wiser to send your hubby and older son up here to secure employment and line up a house then you follow up with the rest of the gang. Just my suggestion.

well compared to Houston, where Mach is moving from, Anchorage will be quite a sticker shock.
