Subsistence hunters on certain federal lands are not bound by state game laws.

you could move out here and be a wildlife trooper. you'd probably be the most popular dude in the cemetery!
either that, or buy new guns for all the villagers. then you'd be the most popular dude, period. you might even be offered a baby or two.
i was offered a baby on saturday night...i said "no thanks, my freezer is already full!" (but not really)

I'll confess, I do own a .22 mag rifle, a Henry that I use for plinking in the back yard, other than the occasional groundhog or field rat if close enough i do not use it for any real hunting. The object is not to cause any great pain and suffering to the animal I kill, it should be a one-shot kill. My .270, Browning A-bolt II w/1.5 x 6 var. Burris signature series scope will cut Deer a flip at 300 yds (130 gr Winchester Ballistic tip),.... Coyotes are dead before the sound reaches them.

No large game here in Florida except for gators. If I were brave and couragous and desire the need to be freezing cold I would be in Alaska with my 30-06. Nevah a .22 for protection or looking for game.
The 9mm handgun is my choice weapon in South Florida and yes it was 92 degrees yesterday. We Vets also own at least one 30-06 long guns. We also just love the .22 mag at the shooting range.
I go with a small group of combat Vets to the range and we just have fun firing the .22. It is also rather inexpensive and that is what we enjoy too.

It's probably just me, I've been told more than once that I'm a quirky SOB from time to time.....but...... about the only thing I want shiny is my truck, my rifles, shotguns, handguns are all dark and non shiny, while hunting, I try for invisible and shiny makes that more difficult.

My brother used to hunt pheasant in Nebraska with a .22 LR. I had a difficult enough time taking pheasant with a 12-gauge, and I didn't like the idea of shooting a rifle (of any caliber) into the air. I have, however, taken squirrel and rabbit with a .22 rifle.
I am in complete agreement that the point of hunting should be for food, not to intentionally inflict pain or suffering on the critter. It is not the caliber of the round that matters, but the velocity and energy of that round. A 40-grain .22 LR with a velocity of 1,050 fps is pretty pathetic in that regard, with only about 100 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle.
Now compare that to your 130 grain .270, which has a velocity of 3,060 fps and 2,705 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle. Even at 300 yards the round still has 1,468 foot pounds of energy.

Plenty of deer and pigs where I'm at (and tons of turkeys!). I see them pretty often when I'm out at dawn and dusk doing fieldwork or on my mountain bike.
