Default Seeking local advice - considering moving to Juneau for the summer - Seeking work!

Originally, I'd been focused on Skagway for some time now. Up until last week, I was sure that would be my destination. Due to lack of housing and other reasons, I began to look closer into Juneau. I never considered it. To my surprise, Juneau seemed more like a place I'd jive with! While the lure to Skagway was to work insane amounts of hours and make/save money, I am not sold on that actually happening based on the leads for work thus far. Of course, I am also seeking an "adventure" before deciding to go corporate, self-employment, or continue following my feet around the world...for now, I'll keep walking...

SO, Juneau...

What can be said about Juneau in terms of work, life, fun? Real stuff, like not found on the visitor bureau page. It was interesting to find this forum to see real comments about Skagway and other places. So here I am wondering about Juneau...

**Is it insane to show up without a job secured (just in case) and are there many seasonal jobs (F&B, hospitality preferred) available around beginning of May? Or have they all been filled? I plan to secure something, but just in case...my mind is already set on coming, whether something is secured by my departure date or not...I just need to know if that is a lame plan. (Be nice, hehe...please)

**Cruise ship/tourism industry - good, bad, ugly? I live in a place fueled by tourism and it has been UGLY!!! So, not wanting to go from "yuk" to "yukier".

**Concept of getting two jobs while I am there...common? Or hard enough just to secure one job?

**Ammenities: fitness center, access to martial arts (aikido preferred), entertainment scene, bike trails, hiking trails, movie theater, college

**Ease of buying things? Like, a car...heard there is a Costco? Not that I need to buy things, but maybe a bike and/or a car???

**Ferry ride over??? No cabins left except 4-berth, that's ridic, I'm only one person - is the solarium really do-able? How about tenting, will I need a special tent? haha, sorry if basic questions, I have never done this before and where I come from temps are usually high 70s, low 80s year-round. Like I said, coming for an adventure! I did Anchorage a few several years back, but Southeast is calling me now.

Whatever helpful input you have, would be great. Thanks in advance!

Junea in in a temperate rainforest with an annual rainfall of between 55" and 90". I hope you are mold resistant and really like rain. Juneau also has a population of less than 30,000 so don't expect too many jobs to be available. There is also a distinct shortage of resturants in Juneau. All the tourists eat aboard their ship, so there is no compelling need to have resturants in Juneau.

Juneau or Ketchikan would be your best bet. You might try putting in an application with Alaska Canopy Adventures in either Juneau or Ketchikan. I know they are hiring for the summer season right now. A phone call might even be better. But there are plenty of other jobs in the toursim industry right now. That might change next month though once numbers become more firm.
