Alaska breeds survivors. And survivors know they need to depend on things that can be depended on. Neighbors, family, friends and yes, pets. They depend on nature, for food. And they know that Mother Nature is a killer. Even in urban places like Anchorage. People freeze here in town every year. And we do have local forecasters (just like New Jersey!).

I am a true animal lover. Losing my dog would be a cakewalk compared to losing my son.

It's like this. Your dog is on the train tracks and about to get hit. The only way to prevent it would be to fling yourself at your dog and knock him off the tracks and get killed yourself.

Most people wouldn't do so. Most people wouldn't even have to think about it before they'd do it for their child.

To some people, including myself, a dog, or any other animal, is just like a child and just as important. I do not have children, and never will, but my dogs are my children and as important as any other living being. If on of my dogs is bad, I smack them on the ass, just like I would with a child, and NO it is not cruel to give them a good smack, child or dog.

It is very sad that dogs are lost at times in the race, but 99.99% of the time the owner did everything in his/her power to save or protect the dog from harm.
