They do carry straw for the dogs, anything else could get too warm for them and make them sick. They have to be careful when wearing the doggie coats that they don't overheat. The malemute I had years ago loved nothing more than laying in a pile of snow in -40 weather with his tongue out panting. I think the majority of these dogs live outside, so they are used to the cold. If they go inside they get hot, shed the fur they need to protect them, and when go out again will have the problems. When they sleep their fur, the outer guard hairs protect them and they roll in a ball, tuck in their noses and rest. Extra blankets or other other warmers would probably do more damage than good. They are fed and their metabolism should balance the cold with the running as to not overheat. I think last year they were going to postpose the race at one point because the weather was too warm for the dogs to safely run.

yep...unless you've had the pleasure or should I say PITAJ(pain in the ass joy) of having a Malimute own you...you have no idea...our baby...we'd look out at several feet of freshly fall'n snow and see nothing in his huge pen....whistle and call him and like a periscope up would come his head with about a 3 foot cap of snow for a hat..had a beautiful insulated dog house...his attitude...don't need no stink'n dog house!!! He even ripped out all the insulation of his dog house!!

You are a great man! Thank you for helping to prevent overpopulation. Bob Barker should be proud of you.
