Longevity Bonus
Is this still paid out? I was reading that if you're 65+ older the state pays you a longevity bonus of $250/month. Hardly enough to live on but it could buy a few pizzas & beers at The Mugshot.

I had a conversation with one of the state Senators about that when they dropped it. He told me it had become so abused by people moving their elder parents up here for free senior apartments and the longevity bonus they dropped the longevity bonus. I don't know if that's true, but it's the excuse I heard. Pisses me off. I've lived here since '66 and could use that in a few years.

The legislator didn't drop it, Frank Murkowski dropped it. Don't know why they don't bring it back.

Yeah, the senator I talked with was in Murkowski's back pocket.

The longevity Bonus was a program created to cover a certain length of time. By the time it was ended, it had already been overdue for several years (it was being phased-out)
Quote:
AKLegislature.com: Losing the longevity bonusGov. Frank Murkowski vetoed funding for the $45 million program last month as a cost-saving measure to the state. The program started as an effort to reward seniors who had been around since statehood, but as it grew more expensive and as oil revenue began to decline, the Legislature changed the program to stop accepting new recipients in 1997.
|
If I well remember, another program has been established to help seniors, since the Longevity Bonus is not longer available.

Magoon's info is right on. Seniors have the program again, but the amount they receive has been cut in half.
I hope I'm laying on a beach in Costa Rica or something long before I have to worry about that benefit!

I would not count on any of such programs, since all depends on what the legislature decides to do at the moment. That's what happened with the Longevity It was being phased-out when the previous governor decided not to support it. The present program is up to $250.00 a month per household, but once the State runs out of money, they will just drop it, too.
The worst case I can think of is cutting the veteran benefits offered to Alaska Natives (veterans of WWII) for years. The DOD has recently decided to stop these benefits. The surviving ones are very old already.
