It took us four days a couple summers ago up to Fairbanks from Baker, Mt. I drove all the way down and back, parents relaxed the whole way.

Oh, you can also avoid Edmonton, too. Unless you plan on visiting the West Edmonton Mall, this place is crazy, too.

Driving/Ferry to SE Ideas?
OK,
Looks like I might be stuck with the week of Memorial Day for our trip to Alaska.
I wouldn't mind going in June, the wife would like to go before school is out, but the 16 year old will be home alone. He is headed to Orlando for a music competition the last week of April/1st week of May but I'm not sure I can swing it by then.
My real question is that we want to check out the SE/islands especially POW, Wrangell, Petersburg, Ketchikan, etc (whatever we have time and $ to do). My wife has a bad back and I'm not too sure about the 30 hour drive to Prince Rupert, then a short ferry ride, then some connecting with the IFA, roaming around, looking for houses, jobs, etc. OR taking a 16 hour drive to Bellingham and then spending 38 hours on the ferry to Ketchikan (she would at least have some time to lay/walk around on the ferry).
Capt Crunch said earlier that the Bell-Ketch trip was boring, but driving an extra day thru Canada might not be much better(?)
Any Ideas??

You are welcome! I'm heading down the highway on May 9th to Redding California for a few days and then go on over to Montana for a week or so. Keep an eye out for a silver Ranger with a topper and yellow Alaska plates in Canada! lol. Good luck on your move, Steven.

When you get to Highway 2 from Fort MaCleod to Calgary and then onto Edmonton, this is a four lane highway. Be careful when you get near smaller towns and villages between Calgary and Edmonton, they pretty much have speed traps when you enter them. The speed limit is 110Kmh or about 65-70mph and when you get to a small town it doesn't give you much time between the "reduced speed ahead" signs to the slower limit. Keep this in mind. At Edmonton, you can skirt the town to the southwest side and get into some hotels on the outskirts of town. Downtown Edmonton isn't fun in traffic. I usually skip Edmonton altogether and stay in a little town called Onoway. There is a motel there with a restaurant there, I forget what it's called.
From Onoway two years ago we made it up to Fort Nelson, this was a all day drive but worth it. We did the northern Rockies in the daytime the next day from Fort Nelson to Whitehorse, another long drive.
Hope this helps.
