The Haines Highway is gorgeous, and you'll have no problems as long as you drive for the conditions. If it's snowing in the pass, waiting a few hours or an extra day is advised unless you have substantial winter experience. I have a mile-by-mile guide to the Haines Highway that will show you in detail what it's like - posted at http://www.explorenorth.com/library/...s_highway.html

Murray, I love that website! Everytime I drive the Alcan, I try to find the places where your site took pictures and snap them for myself. So far I think I have most places. I've done the drive 13 times. I'm driving down to Montana next month for two weeks, can't wait.

It's a great time to be heading for Montana - I'm off on my Spring road trip to Calgary, Kelowna and Whistler in 3 weeks

Murray, what do you think of Family Hotel? This is the only place I've stayed at whenever I stayed in Whitehorse because of it's location because it has a restaurant and a laundromat. What do you think of the other hotels there?

The Family offers good value - you may have noticed that it's mostly folks from the Yukon and Alaska that stay there because they do very little advertising. But we have a few hotels that are good in that sense - the River View, the Edgewater and the Town & Mountain in particular.

I've noticed that, all sorts of Canadian province license plates and from across the stateside. I think I'll just stick to what works for me. One of these days I'll try the others.

Are they done with the Sheep Mountain road project? Two years ago they were making it wider there, looks as though it will be very fast through that area when done instead of blind corners.

Was through there last fall, and it was done for the moment, but they've been working on that stretch from Caribou Creek past the Matanuska glacier for about 5 years at least.

Sheep Mountain appears to be ready for paving this summer.

Default Whitehorse in the winter

Finding a good hotel in Whitehorse in the winter complicates things a bit. The place that offers "indoor" parking sorta does, provided you've got a tiny little car that'll fit in their underground lot. My truck sure doesn't, and the "forgot" to mention that. To add to the frustration, there never seems to be a working plug-in anywhere in that town. They're all either been shut off by the city (the ones on the streets) or have been hit by the snowplow and are out of service (every parking lot). We've been reduced to parking near the room, and running an extension cord out the window to preheat the truck. And it DOES get cold there in the winter!
