The only site I have clicked on is in this forum to the one referred to in previous posts. No one else uses my computer.
Not sure it was this site but the tip off to the credit card company was that they had the wrong expiration date for the card. I cancelled the card with no problem. Do check!!!
Wow, thanks, never thought of that. That is just bizarre...but how would they get your credit card number in the first place? I'm on a new laptop with no information like that on it at all, not even my paypal account.

It sounds like you have a trojan or other malware in your computer which is sharing info on your computer to others

Tracing an IP address isn't difficult if you know how, but you have to have the headers in order to do so properly. For instance, the entire town of Skagway who uses Alaska Power and Telephone internet has the same IP address.
Yeppers!

nope...computer geek here!! I run more security than the average IT people! I ran every test possible and computer is clean....if they had taken the info they would have had the correct expiration date...went through it with the fraud dept and it is not off my computer.....they pay people to track info down on you after you click on the site thru your IP address!!! Professional ripoff!!
also I have two laptops....the one I use everyday does not have any PayPal or credit card info strictly for stuff like this. It was off this one that the IP was pulled! Anyone can get your card number...it is the expiration date and authorization number on the back they can't get.
google the WCbilling.com and you will see how they do it!!

It's really a personal decision how much someone shares in an open forum; I have no problem with most people here knowing stuff, but who really knows whose lurking, et al. And there are people who spend hours trying to glean personal information about people; for what reason I am not sure. I have family in business as well as in politics (liberal politics at that )
so I prefer to be a bit anon. on sites that get the large amount of traffic that this one does.
Most of those would be government spies.

I suppose someone could track any of us down but I'd prefer to make them have to work hard at it if they have no business knowing...

Oh by the way....a good security and simple one is to use only one card with a low limit for online.

well...unfortunately you will find that to rent a car, buy plane tickets or many other things you gotta have one....believe me I would love to not have to have one at all but....it does make so many things easier....in many place now you can not use cash....I did business in NY city and no cash allowed, account charge which required a credit card for a hold (not charged to unless you didn't pay your bill)...saved us having to carry cash when traveling overseas...

Ahh yes, the emerging cashless society in the big cities...no thanks to that stuff, I value my privacy. Cash for me. Someone doesn't want cash, their loss, not mine. I don't do credit, my grandparents learned that lesson in the Depression, many more are learning it now.
