A very simple reality check is to get a globe map and look at where those islands actually are.

The Island is on the Northern edge of Russia and not Alaska. It is barren for the most part and more of a rock...

You are touting something as happening maybe now, when the dateline on the article was written in 2003. If you have any recent info it would be more pertinent to the rest of us. Without that all I have to say is WTH? These talks started with Nixon in 1970. As stated in your article. Nearly 40 years ago. I gotta say that I'm not too concerned.
Heck, they even mentioned Jesse Helms and Kissinger also. That has all been awhile ago.
Found a map. From what I see they are thousands of miles inside what most of us would consider Russia. http://www.statedepartmentwatch.org/MapOfGiveaway.htm

There's a great factual novel written about an American adventurer who decides to get a grant and a bunch of guys to hold up on Wrangell Island and claim it from the Russians. They hired a little Aleut woman to cook and sew for them. Two years later she was the only survival. It's a facinating read! It's simply "Ada Blackjack". I'll find my copy and come up with the author later. Your heart will break at the way Ada is treated after struggling to keep those men alive.
