One thing I've noticed about Alaskan bush pilots: they like to land in the most untenable and unthinkable of places, which often means VERY short take-offs and landings.

Check this out (hardly seems possible...how do they do that?) :

YouTube - Alaska Bush Pilots Short Takeoff And Landing Competition (Check out that landing! I'm pretty darn certain I can go faster on my bicycle!) (and I'm an OLD fart!)

And...here's one on floats...

"Alaskan Airport": Any cleared and semi-level portion of land (or water) 50' in length...

A Supercub will take off very short. You can hear the wind blowing, too. That also helps lift. Doesn't take much to produce lift on a Cub, it being a cloth covered plane helps on the weight.

Another great STOL (short take-off landing) plane is the Aviat Husky.

Another great STOL plane is the Twin Otter!

Very cool stuff! Thanks for posting Bud and Warpt!

Not to take anything away from the pilots, but you can tell from the videos that all were done in fairly stiff headwind conditions (either because of mic noise, blowing snow, etc.)

Never the less, it gives me quite a bit to aspire to!

I really like those short take offs. The turbo otter on floats was great.

I attended the competition when they had it in Gulkana. I watched a 206 get off in 90 feet without any headwind. Pretty impressive. The pilot had removed all the seats, the battery and most of the fuel. Still was impressive.
