Moving to Bethel
Hello,
I am considering taking a position with YKHC as a nurse. I am trying to find out as much as i possibly can so I can make an educated decision. Can anyone help me out?
1. How is the housing availability?
2. What is GCI's cable and internet like?
3. How much do utilities usually cost?
4. Does anyone know of a nice place to live in Bethel that is for rent and can send pics of the house and surrounding area?
5. Can someone post pictures of the area?
thanks

1. There are numerous rentals available. You can ask HR from Yk about housing within the company or available rentals.
2. GCI is the only internet provider here, pretty much the only choice. It's not as fast as you are used to.
3. Utilities are spendy here. It depends on how the house is build. Anywhere from $200 a month on up.
4. You might want to find a place near the hospital for a rental, or buy a vehicle here or ride a bike like I do.
5. I have plenty of pictures of Bethel in the picture thread.

Yup, it's slow. The hotels in Anchorage are faster than the fastest internet they offer here. Well, any hotel anywhere in the country.
You can't buy alcohol here either, it's a "damp" town meaning you can bring it in but you can't buy it. There is a petition going around now to drop the damp status to make it to where you can order any amount you want. I don't drink but I signed it for all my drunk friends.

I dont see why its damp anyways, all it does is encourage illegal sales in town and half the people stay hammered 24/7 regardless.

Hardly anyone shows up for elections here and things pass and everyone whines about it. If anything with alcohol comes up on a ballot, EVERYONE comes and votes. Pretty sad!

Thank you all so much for the information. I really appreciate it. I will be coming in June. I am going to formally accept the position on Monday. I am bringing a vehicle with me, I know it is expensive, but i really want mine up there. Are there any mechanics in town to do work on vehicles. Also does anyone have a boat or "snowmachine" for sale?

Yes, Ed is the best mechanic here in town. There is plenty of boats and snowmachines for sale, you see them posted in the stores and newspaper weekly.
