FERMENTED 'tail' or flipper' is fermented not with sugar, but with other animals parts. a type of mold forms. I do know this.. .. when snow first covers the village in the fall time (Point Hope), that is when the tail is brought out of the underground siglauq. It has been there since last may, fermenting between walrus I believe, I am not sure but I will get a more detailed explanation of exactly how this works. But I do know this, that when that tail is served in Oct. May - Oct that sits underground - fermenting. do not have any sugar that day, is what everyone says. That tail itself, is a major 'downer' it will put you to sleep, it is very strong. eating some, will make you very tired, ( I have been told ) and if you have had any sugar, fruit, pop, candy - this food will kill you !

From the hardening of the crust on top of the food in your stomach that will not let the gas escape, and the person dies from botulisim. These are the exact words, I have heard for decades, from elders, many elders, in many villages.

Everyone up here, in most of the villages, knows why Henry Attanguana died in 1989 ! ( In Point Hope).

I have all the whaling captains in most villages - reading what I type, they know me, I will absolutly refuse to ever 'make up / fabricate or lie - about any of these stories - TOO MUCH IS AT STAKE HERE. -

The very first words spoken to me, by a whaling captain, out on the ice, in 1982, when I was literally dragged down there against my will. Sick as a dog with the flu..

This man.. .. said these words to me.. ..

' the truth must be told !

It is my understanding (and that of the CDC and more locally for you the Alaska Health & Social Services) Botulism is present in the food item (whatever it may be) due to lack of proper preparation and/or storage... according to the epidemiology of botulism, it has absolutely nothing to do with the consumption of 'sugar' (in whatever form) prior to the consumption of the contaminated food. It doesn't just show up because someone had a candy or some ketchup or some orange juice on the same day that s/he ate some pickled whale meat.

However, it is possible that some people have a higher tolerance for the disease than others, whatever the 'old folk tales' may be about consuming a sugar prior to consuming the contaminated food.
