cell phone service?
I might be driving to Fairbanks from Chicago and I was wondering if I will have cell phone coverage all the way there.I have sprint/nextel I'd hate to drive and have no service for hundreds of miles. So if any one has info on the cell coverage for that drive I would really appreciate the info....

We used to drive it all the time before we even dreamed of cell phones. Most of us lived through it too. There will be many 100+ mile stretches where you will not have cell phone service. If that freaks you out, you might want to get a sat phone.

When you get on the road you will discover the phone is secondary to a good supply of music. Limited radio reception too! Both have something in each little town you see in Canada. Find out who acsalaska.com partners are. They have the best coverage possible in Alaska and Canada. I didn't pay any roaming charges while in Canada. ATT thinks these are international calls. Sprint Nextel????

You will need a full Ipod for the drive, I have two. One is filled with country for the parents and the other is filled with a wide variety of tunes. I'll let you know how GCI cells work in Canada. Might bring my AK Digital phone along, too. It seemed to work everywhere in Canada where AT&T didn't two years ago.

I had sprint but dumped them for AT&T. There is no sprint coverage up there.

We had a tracfone and it worked pretty well since it picks up off of other carriers towers. There were still stretches with no covering. Radio was even worse and we had a Sirrus installed just for the ride up.
