we deleted our last post for the following reasons. we have been building for three years. a $70k boat became $200k plus. resin cost trippled, shiping cost doubled in the last two years. 50% of all materials shiped where damaged or the wrong product. we have suffered through two wind storms $6,000. one flood $2.550. people stoned on drugs ran their car through one hull. [semi finished] $4.000. chainsaw, tears, haul hull to dump! they of course had no insurance. my marrage moved toward the deep six concept! them entered a monk traveled for nepal. he camped out on our land. he showed us that it was not all about us. and in fact this is what happens to people who want sail away from it all. I will qoute the harbor master across the bay from homer. its nice to exscape ,but when you return, its time to PAY!! I will find the website.
SO! we contacted many harbor masters in Alaska. we will pass on HOW rude 99.999% where. if they wast their time to answer you. first you enter a three waiting period at a price per ft. to be on a list. then there is $50 filing fee, other fees[what ever] and on and on!!! Hmmm! let me see. I contacted Bankok harbor by email. they emailed me backe in one hour. GET THIS! they talked to me as if I was a human, they requested info on my boat, and what I did for a living! I informed them the basic info on boat fed stats, and that I was an HVAC machanical engineer. Alaska fees for a 50ft commerical boat is about $600 to $1200 a month, plus ramp fees, plus fees, plus fees! plus electrical per ft per day, plus fees plus fees. plus filing fees . dont forget the hiden fees. thialand has one fee for vessels under 75ft commerical [[[ $32 a month]]] plus they offered an opened end visa for engineers free. electrical per day day was not discussed, my vessel has endless electrical output. for a hole village of 500 would be the limit. to say the least of 80 gallons a day of desalination water. to the person that said harbor fees are the same around the world. sip another beer and or travel. |

Everything is cheaper there. This is Alaska. You have to live with the costs and accept them. Please don't sail all the way over here just to groan and moan about prices. And I don't see why anyone calling themselves an engineer should get a discount for anything. It's a sail boat. If your just gonna park it in some harbor...you may as well drag it up on a beach and live in it, to get away from harbor fee's.

There you go. If your gonna live here...you gotta want it. Get a chunk of water front property, and your free as the breeze! You can put in a dock and anchor the sailboat out front. Sounds like "Water World", which in a good portion of the state you could live year round on a boat. Weather in a harbor or a cozy cove. But you need to come to the realization...things are gonna cost more here...especially in the more remote places. You can get plenty of food from the sea, but you'll want some variety once in awhile, from a real grocery store. It's here for the taking...but you gotta want it. You don't get paradise for free.

Savlor11, I liked your idea that you mentioned in another thread about a floating flea market though I would be concerned if I were you that an enterprise of that nature would be a bit too high end for the POW community. And you might just give Wal*Mart ideas.
I would be interested in hearing more about your waterfront property between Noyes and SB. Sounds like Atlantis has risen; who would have ever guessed it would be in SE Alaska. Just think of the possible theme park possibilities in store for you; those pesky little moorage fees could end up being very small drops in some very large buckets. ![]() Don't worry too much about being used for target practice. If the residents here were anything more than big talk the place wouldn't be a haven for child molesters and other societal bottom feeders. I hope everyone remembers to check out the National Sex Offender Registry before moving to any community. Last edited by Rainy; 04-09-2007 at 02:53 PM.. |

Salvor11...neat that you bought some property in my neck of the woods! I really have to put in my .02 here about POW/surrounding area, since it is the only area of Alaska I have first-hand knowledge about. There are some eccentrics and criminals here, to be sure, but I can say it also has some of the most astounding natural beauty and very good people, as well. I don't think POW is a "haven" for criminals; it has its fair share but I don't think the average resident here is a bad person! There are so many honest, hardworking local people, who are also willing to help others. Besides, that is one great thing about living here...you can get away from people most of the time if you desire, (especially out where you bought) and have your own hunting and fishing playground.
Of course, if one is not in to hunting/fishing, it is true there isn't much to do here. You must have a genuine interest or passion for the outdoors to make life livable. I say, make the most of the light, and live outside!! I hope your move/stay is a wonderful experience. If you get onto POW, I'd be happy to show you around, introduce you to a few folks, or help you in any way you might need. |

Well, it's quite possible to have a profound appreciation and love for the "outdoors" without fishing and hunting or hunting and fishing. My own is primarily a botanical one and not activity or sports oriented. But natural beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I prefer my mountains to be living.
Quote:
And of course I have no need of fishing, or of hunting either, apparently, as I was blessed with one of the...first harbingers of spring on this lovely afternoon, when I opened my pickup door. There it was, right on the driver's seat, a hunk of what my ex identified as venison, nicely vaccuum sealed. As every Alaska girl knows, hunks of meat left in various locations around one's home or vehicle means only one thing, that she has an admirer, and that the spring sap is rising. I don't eat meat though. I do think that salvor was joking about the location of his waterfront lots, though, because you can't buy what doesn't exist. Oh---I have to add that those little green emoticons at the top of my post just above give me the creeps and I never would have used it; how did it get there? Do I have to change my password again?

Rainy: re: your gift...well, you are a lucky girl! I know one gentleman who brings me fresh crab, but not very often...
Yes, u r right...it is not necessary to enjoy hunting/fishing to live here...if you are a nature "watcher" there is plenty of beauty to take in. I thought there was land for sale somewhere out there--but you said someone had purchased the old SB site...probably I'm mixed up...wouldn't be the first time. ![]() |
